    Default Mustang SS???

Back in the early 80s I built an MPC 1:25 scale Mustang that had SS molded where the 5.0 emblems usually are. I figured MPC got some information about a Mustang SS from Ford, designed the mold, and by the time they found out there was not going to be an SS it was too late to change. Then today I come across this on ebay!

Guess I was sort of right!

Wonder how many of those models were made.. since 0 SS's were probably actually released, your model is more rare, since it actually exists

If you are talking about the model car (as my work computer won't let me go to E-Bay), MPC had the 'Snake Bite' kit that had the 'SS' emblems on the fenders and on the trunk lid. You come across them sometimes (I have 3 in my collection) and they usually end up going for about $25 on EBay. Not too bad of a kit, and when AMT took over MPC, the molds were cut up to produce the 87 GT kit they had/have (also think they kitted it in 88 as well).

I have one of those kits from when I was a kid. The first thing I did (and this was years ago) was to sand those SS emblems off of it, because I couldn't believe that a model car company could have made such a huge mistake .

I saw one of those model kits about 10-12 years ago at a friend's house. Thought it was something THEY had done since they were rather GM oriented. They assured me that it was not so.

That car is #155822, mine was 155731, and it said GT, though it had the GT decals rather than the GT badges. I think the car was refered to as the GT in the magazines I saw, from 1981, which announced its upcoming release.

I think that guy selling it on ebay would have way better luck by simply calling it a GT. I was just reading the post on the GT Registry site and it sounds like Ford called it the SS very early on before any cars were actually produced for sale. Most likely only one or two were actually badged with SS for testing purposes. Mine is numbered 140860 and built in Nov. 81

At least some good Mustang trivia was uncovered...

I have no reliable source but I did come across some info about around 20 having been produced. And yes, it would have been early on, or even pre-production.

In today's episode of Thread from the Dead, the '82 Mustang SS (MPC kit) lives! If you look at the scoop, it's actually a 1982 Mustang Turbo SS. This was 1982, after all, and everything was turbo, including sunglasses.
