    Default Question about TRXs

I read this in another thread:

For the cost of those 4 tires, you could probably buy 4 excellent condition rims and new tires in standard sizing. That Black would look excellent with some nice polished rims. Nice ride!
FYI:The actual rims diameter is 390 millimeters which in turn equals 15.35 inches

And I won't spend that kind of money either on them.....unless it was a concorse resto

Now, would it be possible to have them professionally turned/machined down to 15" or even 15.1" so we could squeeze a 15 inch rubber on?

No, for one there is not enough material, and second it has I think a 60 degree bead instead of a 90 degree bead like most tires.

The wheels don't have enough material to machine both the diameter and the bead

Cut out the centers and have new hoops welded on. Then you could play with the width and the offset...

I've seen several sets of trx rims cut and welded like that so they turned out to be 15s with a propper backspacing.

This has all been discussed before in another thread. You'll end up spending just as much money any way you come at this thing. TRXs look great on the cars they went on. If you're not burning up tires racing every ricer at every corner just buckle down and find a good deal on the right tires for the TRX. I think Sears carries a tire that fits. Stay away from Coker. I was able to find a guy that sold me a new set for $400. They will be on my Cobra as long as I own it. You could also consider investing in a set of runners to roll on when you're not concerned about who sees the Stang in non-original status. I think you'll be sorry if you chop up a set of TRXs to put a different size set of tires on it. They just won't look right without the appropriate tire.

Has anyone installed factory TRX wheels on a car with 1987-93 V8 spindles and 11" brakes? Given that the wheels are 15.3", they should clear, but I want to make sure.

I haven't and don't know if they will fit, but why bother with TRX stuff at all now knowing that the 16" LMR repros exist?

This is just a case of a customer with a car that has the factory TRX wheels and tires on the car still. They want to upgrade the brakes. I just need to find out if the 11" brakes will fit with the wheels.

Pretty sure they will clear. I believe I’ve seen it before, but I have not personally tested it to verify.

Good topic for the 4 lug brake upgrade thread

I have a set of 87+ V8 spindles and brakes for my 82 RS. I also have a TRX wheel/tire combo. I can try and test fit this for you today or tomorrow. I will post pictures and update once done.

I can't imagine why it would NOT work....I mean the 1987-1990 GT's came with 15" Turbine wheels and LX's with 15" 10-holes. The TRX is 15.35" so my math says yes....go for it. Will be interested to see if Trey's test fit says otherwise.

The internet/rumor/superstition says that there are early 10 hole wheels, with I believe a 1985 part number, that do not fit with the 11" brakes. I'm never going to tell a customer that something is going to work, unless I'm positive that it will. The ID of the TRX wheel is probably about 0.3" larger, but the drop center could be in a different location for instance.

    Found it:

Ok, got a small break in the weather here in TX right now to get out and check the TRX fitment on a 1989 GT.

The wheel/tire combo fit just fine without any clearance issues that I could see. The wheel spins freely with no rubbing or issues. I was not able to get under the car to get a better look at the backside due to the soggy ground. I did take some pictures trying to show the brake caliper clearance . . . they are not great, but maybe they will help someone. It felt like I could get my fingers between the top of the caliper and the inner wheel shell, so I don't think there are any issues.

I did not set the combo down on the ground nor am I able to drive the car, so I can't comment on that type of clearance, but I doubt its any different than the OEM Turbine wheel/tire I pulled off for the test fit. Hope that answers the questions. Feel free to let me know if anyone needs anything else checked, additional pictures, etc.

    Trey,

Thanks very much. Looks like plenty of clearance between the caliper and wheel.
