    Default Rear brake shoe size

I was looking for rear brake shoes and on Autozone and Advance Auto they show two rear brake shoe sizes. A 9 x 1.74 or 9 x 1.81.

I don't recall what I put in last brake job. Autozone has no warranty info for rear brakes on my account so I can't match it up to what I bought last time.

Is there any way to determine which size shoe my 84 LX convertible takes?

I'm with KevinK here.... I don't think there were 2 different sizes of brake shoes for your car.

It may just be how a manufacturer measures them.... maybe the actual brake shoe itself, versus the semi-circular plate that the shoe is mounted on.... dunno though. I notice RockAuto has brake shoes for your car and that some are listed as 1-3/4" and some are listed as 1.81". I could see where that might just be how exact one is in measuring them.... basically how fine of a measurement increment one goes down to. Put a set of calipers on them and they're 1.81", but stick a tape measure on them and one might just say they are 1-3/4", maybe a skosh over. Remember, you're only talking about 60 thousandths of an inch here.

heres a link to Autozone search results for rear brake shoes with 2 slightly different shoe sizes.

Heres the link to Advance Auto search results that shows two options but both simply listed as 9 inch.

Both my 85 2.3 and 88 5.0 use the same rear brakes pads. I use Motorcraft BR75B, listed as 1 3/4 for 9" drums.

The Ford MPC list 9" x 1.75 and 10" x 1.75 brakes On 81-89 mustangs. No explanation on the variation.

I am guessing a lot of this fine measuring could be how hard someone is pushing on calibers.

Ford lists the shoe size as 9x1-3/4, but I agree with others that functionally the 1.75 should be equivalent to 1.81. Different manufacturers measure things differently. The big difference seems to be 9" versus 10" drums.

Here is an older thread discussing the same thing. They talk about the 474 and 569 shoes. From this thread they interchange with maybe a small difference in the form of the metal core and how it interfaces with the backing plate. http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...hoes-and-Drums

Raybestos lists the 474 shoes for your car: https://www.brakepartsinc.com/raybes...rtNumber=474PG They list the 569 shoes for '87+ model years: https://www.brakepartsinc.com/raybes...rtNumber=569PG

Why not call up Maximum Motorsports and see what they say and order their shoes? Not much more than what you'll pay at the parts store for likely a better shoe. https://www.maximummotorsports.com/H...9-93-P665.aspx

No differential listed under the brake shoe application. I did not check drums or backing plates.

    even rockauto has listings for 9 x 1.74 and 9 x 1.81 under 84 Mustang.

The 9 x 1.81 possibly for GT? There has to be a reason they make a slightly wider shoe.

The GT's rear brakes are no different than non-GT Mustang models. I'm still thinking that the shoes are the same size and that it's just a measuring variance.

To that effect, I ordered 2 more sets of rear brake pads.... 1 set of the 1-3/4" wide ones and a set of the 1.81" wide ones. Fyi, I used RockAuto and AutoZone as my data sources.

I'll measure them using precision instruments and compare their measurements, and also compare them dimensionally to the Motorcraft BR75B pads that I originally bought, and will (eventually) be put on my car as part of a total rear brake rebuild. I'll post up my findings here.... it'll probably will be next weekend. I'm real curious now what my research will find. Personally, I'm thinking they'll measure out the same.... but we'll see.

    To be continued....
