    Default #$^$%&##@@!@!#$%^$%^&*^&^&*#@!! I GIVE UP

So, Cox Communications bought Cable America, fine. Whatever. We had Cox Cable Internet when we lived in a couple of other places, all was well. Cool.

The last several days have been ridiculous.

Web access is great for about five minutes, you get going great on what you're doing, then nothing. Or it's impossibly slow to the point of giving up. Or you can download stuff but not upload anything (like adding images to a gallery, for instance). OR, IRC will be working just fine, but ZERO webpages can be accessed. Sometimes instant messengers work, sometimes they don't. It's all completely random. Or randumb.

Now, other sites are working just fine, but I can't get to this one and a couple of others, yet I know that FEP.com is up and running wonderfully.

    GRRR!

Emailing is hit and miss. I can't even bother using web-based email at all.

I'm hitting submit on this and it'll either be done in an instant or take FOREVER or not happen AT ALL.

So, if you haven't heard from me, this is why. I'm not ignoring you, I'm just trying to avoid the 'Net for a while since it's just too damned frustrating.

I have dial up so everything loads slow. I did have real fast internet access when I was up at college. I remember the problems they always had with that. Sometimes it was sloooooow, sometimes it was fast, sometimes some stuff wouldn't load, sometime it would all just crash. What a fiasco. Good idea on just avoiding it all for a while. It does get annoying quickly.

That's how the wireless is on my laptop. I have to keep refreshing the internet connection just to get a page to load. That's with every page. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it takes 30 minutes of restarting/refreshing/reloading/etc to get the internet to start working. It seems to be a compatibility issue between the router and my laptop since my wife's laptop works fine. My computer works great on my neighbor's wireless, but its too far to reach from my living room. One of these days I'll break down and spend the $100+ on a new router.

At work, we have outdated Netscape web browsers that don't load most sites, so surfing isn't much better there. Fortunately this site works, except the pics don't load properly.

    evlgt85:

Have you tryed using a different dns server?

    In m$

    control panel
    network connections
    local area connection
    general/properties
    highlite tcp/ip properties
tick "use the following dns servers"
    preferred dns server 4.2.2.1
    alternate dns server 4.2.2.2
    ok

If your using osx or a linux distro i can help change it there too...

Also from a comand prompt you could try pinging your dns servers.

    example c:\ping 4.2.2.1

Also, with the cable/dsl modems, turn yours off for 3-5 minutes. Then power it back up. They will usually reset their routing tables or whatever and may get a more reliable server.

I had a tech make me do this and I got a new IP address and my service got better. They were having issues with some of their hw apparently.

That sucks... I work in the Midwest ( mainly Kansas) so I really can't help. But I did call one of the local contacts and he said that they are switching the nodes over right now and that is probably what is causing the disruption. Best of luck.

I had a similar internet problem with cox internet. I went through three of their modems because they kept dying. One serviceman came out and asked if the house was ever hit with lightning. I said not that I know of. He showed me "the trap" that was attached to the cable line in the box that was all burnt looking. He said he took it out of the loop and I should also have HBO now. Sure enough the internet was fast and STABLE as ever and I had HBO for free.

In the RF/microwave world, traps are commonly used name which is the same thing as a filter. In this case, a notch filter, that "notches out" or filters out a very specific band of frequencies, i.e the frequency band that pre-digital cable HBO is on.

They have really crappy DNS servers that like to break every other day. Other than that, they're ok.

I have Verizon DSL at home and it's pretty damn fast.

I have Comcast Cable at work and it SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is the SLOWEST thing ever!! I hate it because I type so fast and we are so busy trying to check patients in and half the time I just handwrite stuff because I'm afraid I'm going to grab the computer and throw it out the window. We are on a network but only about 3 other offices use the comcast, we were part of a pilot program.

I am waiting for Verizon FIOS (fiber optics) to be available in my area. It's already in some of the local suburbs and I've heard it's amazingly fast.

I just got off the phone with our new COX support tech and he said he could have someone out to my house next Sunday . Seven days, NOW THAT'S customer service! I haven't had Internet for about 2 hours and now it works fine? My cable modem LED labeled "ONLINE" isn't lit up when the Internet is on the blink. I hope they get this figured out! Ken.
