Default Mustang GT decal on hatch of 85-86 GT

Ok, I have been told on here and seen various topics saying that on a Black 85-86 GT's hatch, the Mustang GT decal is silver. On my 85 GT, it is charcoal. My car has the original paint yet. Is there a possibility that some of the black cars came with a charcoal decal, because mine did. Now I am not acting like a know-it-all, but I do know what my car has and I do know the history of my car being as I am the second owner of it and my dad being the first. Does anybody elses black GT have the charcoal decal??

So does anybody think it would be "wrong" to put a charcoal decal back on? I know there has to be more people out there with the charcoal decal on a black car. Does anybody have a black 85 GT with a build date of 4/85?? Thats what my car is and maybe they did run out of silver then and used the charcoal? I am not trying to make anyone mad or call them a liar, just trying to find out if it is correct to replace with a charcoal decal, or going with the silver decal which is easier to find. Thanks.

In '86 my buddy bought a new GT and I gave him a ride to the dealership to pick it up when it came in and it was black and had a charcoal sticker on the hatch, so I can verify that what you have is factory. I think it looks better because it matches the big sticker that covers most of the hood as well as the paint from the body moulding down. Silver just looks out of place in my opinion.

Cool. Does your buddy still have that car? I think I remember seeing at least one more black 85-86 GT with the charcoal decal. I just never understood why Ford would have put the silver decal on when ALL of the trim and hood decal were charcoal.

It's been brought up that Ford chose the silver because it is easier to see than the dark charcoal on black paint. Is it true? Maybe someone knows. imo, it makes sense. The rear silver decal matches the silver 'GT' decal that is on the hood.

The black cars appear to have received a vinyl hood decal that is made without the 'GT' cutout. They made the silver 'GT' decal to be laid on top of the vinyl, where the typical cutout would be present on the other colored cars.

If you like the charcoal, I wouldn't be too concerned if it's correct or not. Who knows what happened that day your car was made. If they were out of silver, then charcoal it was.

What color is your 'GT' decal on the hood?

My car has the cutout in the charcoal hood decal. The GT is black (body color). If you look in my album, you can see that I think. Thanks for the help so far everbody.

He doesn't have the car anymore, he wrecked it a year and a half after he got it. He had it fixed then traded it on a pickup truck... go figure? His also had the GT cut out of the hood sticker... I think they used the part they cut out of the hood decal to put on the hatch... probably to save money. We can only speculate why the black cars came two different ways... but yours is stock, just like my buddy's was. His had the GT side mouldings too, I have to look at your pictures to see if yours is like that also.

I had a black 86 GT with charcoal sticker on the hatch and hood alike. It was part of a package deal and so only had it for about 3 months last year. I will try to dig up a picture tonight.

Does anyone have an aftermarket source for the charcoal hood decal and rear deck decal? Everywhere I look they offer black.

Back in High School my buddy bought a 2 year old black GT and it came with a charcoal rear emblem on the hatch. I would bet my life that it also came with a matte black hood decal with the "GT" cut out but I could be wrong. Either way, matte black or charcoal it had the "GT" cut out and was the body color, black.

My car has a painted on hood decal so I just added a black "GT" to match the body color.

Like most have said, it's your car, do what you like.

I know it's been a while, but i'll add to the thread because I think it's relevant. My DGM 86 GT has a silver decal on the back, my Dad's 86 GT, which he bought brand new in 1986, which is Light Regatta Blue has a silver decal on the hatch as well.

I would put the charcoal if it was me. There wasnt any standards back then. I was an original owner of an 82 GT that had a decal for the word GT which people swore was wrong and that it should have been an emblem. I am original owner of red GT and mine is charcoal.

Early 82 GTs had a decal. Later ones had an emblem.

The original first few months from July 1981, the so called 1982 GT package was a hastily re-buck coded SS Mustang..so the badges were vinal stickers because FoMoCo had no tooling for the sudden re-emergence of the GT. Ford was planning to use the SS name again, like they did on the SS Escort. Later on in the 80s, Ford realised maybee vinal decals werent such a bad idea. Anything could happen to meet Fords production schedules, especially since there were a few strikes which changed the contents of Fords empty box process. Sometimes produnction damage or line snarl-ups caused some cars to have different sources of stickers or parts.
