The Four-Eyed Mustang: savior or laughing stock?
If someone blurts out the word, “Mustang”; many people will either think of the original 1964 ˝ to 1973 Mustangs, think of the regrettable 1974-1978 Mustang II, or the 1987-2006 Mustangs. However, rarely anyone ever recall the 1979-1986 Ford Mustang simply because, it doesn’t look like a Mustang to the average person. The boxy shape, the four-headlamp arrangement (hence the nick name, Four Eye), the diminutive size and the lack of the prancing horse on anywhere on the body. A Four-Eyed Owner usually has to tell an uneducated person that it’s a Mustang and even then, that person is quite skeptical. What makes it even worse, many uneducated Mustang owners change over the front end to the newer 1987 to 1993-style nose so they can be better accepted. Unfortunately, for the most part, those “bastardized” mustangs end up rotting in the junkyard. Simply put, the 1979 to 1986 Ford Mustang is, along with the 1974 to 1978 Mustang II, simply the most overlooked, under appreciated and most unloved mustang produced despite the fact that the 1979-86 mustang single handedly brought back the muscle car, revived the Ford-Chevrolet rivalry and open up the MASSIVE aftermarket that many Mustang owners now enjoy. The 1979 to 1986 Ford Mustang is one of the most significant Mustangs produced in terms of advancements of technology in many fronts: aerodynamics, engine technology and crash-worthiness and of course, power. Despite it’s obscurity and lack of respect in most Mustang circles, it certainly played quite a significant role in Mustang history.
On its release to the general public late in 1978, the FOX-based mustang was considered as a radical departure from any mustang before. Automotive Magazines commented that it certainly breaks any tie to the earlier style as all the mustangs leading up until 1978 had similar bodylines and a similar layout. While the 1979 Mustang is completely different unique look. It had, at the time, an aerodynamic body to help with gas mileage. The 1979 Mustang was an instant hit: selling 369,936 models the first year. Eventually, approximately 1.6 million Mustangs were built between 1979 and 1986. Throughout the 7-year run, the Four Eyed Mustang received two facelifts in 1983 and 1985 to make the mustang look more current with the time. For the 302ci V8, now renamed the 5.0 Liter V8 to emphasize “moderness”, horsepower was originally rated at 140. From then, horsepower eventually peaked to 210 in 1985 (when the average engine produced around 135hp). Horsepower finally settled at 200hp in 1986 do to some Government law trying to restrict hp because they thought cars like the Mustang and its arch rival, the Chevrolet Camaro were becoming too powerful. Luckily, that law was soon repealed a year later and of course, horsepower jumped to 225 to the ’87 mustang GT. Why the resurgence in horsepower? Simple, the 1982 Ford Mustang GT (which was last produced in 1969) returned and lit the spark on the horsepower wars between Ford and GM (most specifically, Chevrolet and Pontiac) when the engine in the GT was given new life and produced 157hp; at a time where the average engine produced around 90hp at the time. So needless to say, the Ford Mustang was at the forefront at the resurgence of horsepower. Of course in it’s 7-year production run, there several special models were offered from either the Factory or from aftermarket tuners: the Saleen Mustang, the SVO, Roush mustangs and countless others. With the advent of Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection in 1986, the aftermarket burst wide open and companies like BBK, Edelbrock, Air Flow research, JBA began investing into the 5.0 to get the most out of the new Fuel Injected 5-liter. Over the years though, as the “aero nose” Mustang, SN-95/Fox 4 Mustangs and finally the new S-197 Mustangs were introduced, with each design starting to share more and more with the original bodylines of the ’64-68 Mustangs, people began forgetting about the Four Eyed Mustang and it’s contributions to the Mustang name. Even some people began questioning whether the Four-Eyed Mustang is really a true Mustang because of its lack of similarity compared to other Mustangs. To add insult to injury, people began forgetting about the contributions made from the Four-Eyed Mustang, which is a crying shame. Perhaps it is people’s shortsightedness towards the history and in this case, Mustang History. Ignorance perhaps. Whatever is, the Four Eyed Mustang, is now amongst the least respected of all the incarnations of the hallowed name.
If there were one thing that ties all Mustangs together, it would be the layout. All mustangs are front-engine, rear wheel drive and in nearly all years (except in 1974), a V8 can be ordered. They’re fairly inexpensive to buy and of course, there are oceans of aftermarket parts to hop-up any Mustang, especially the Four-Eyed Mustang. Interchangeability between years is also a great advantage that the Four-Eyed Mustang possesses. The FOX chassis has been used in the Mustang since 1979 all the way to 2004. Consequently, almost any part from a newer Mustang will fit onto a Four-Eyed with little to no modification. So, the Four Eyed Mustang is also easily upgradeable to say the least.
The Four Eyed Mustang is just as much as a Mustang as was the 1964.5-1973, 1974-1978, 1987-2006 Mustangs. The Four Eyed Mustang has brought back the true pony car from certain doom, rekindled the hot-rodding hobby, rekindled the war between Ford and GM and finally served Ford valiantly in various forms for 25 years, a testament to its design. The Four Eyed Mustang is the godfather of the modern muscle car movement. While the naysayers deny that it is a Mustang, it was the boxy little car that almost single-handedly brought back affordable power back to the masses in a time when power was thought to be a thing of the past.

If I can offer a couple suggestions. You might want to re-word the "some government law" phrase. Saying it like that sounds like animosity<sp>
Also the part about "almost any part from a newer Mustang" Everyone here know what parts you mean, but I think saying "almost any" is quite a stretch
