Default Salvage yard run on saturday....

Well all... I went off to the salvage yards yesterday to take measurments and look for a couple of things.

I took my mesurments at one yard and started walking around and spotted something kinda sad. It was a trashed I6 ASC Mclaren. I forget what year exactly... but the I6 is a good range.

I also found a really nice looking 99.9% in good condition red sunshield for a FOX Fairmont/Zephyr/Mustang/Capri with the factory sunroof.

In another yard I found a really nice well taken care of 73 lincoln with a 4300 motorcraft carb and a 460 V8. I took the 4300 carb for my Edsel. Poor Lincoln was parked in a wrong spot, towed and never claimed. It was beuatiful too.

And at the last yard I found somewhat of what I was looking for. I found an 82 hatch Stang GT that at one time had rear window louvers. A couple pieces of the louver hardware was still there... so I took those as a reference for the ones I'll be having a friend cut for me with his plasma cutter.

    Thats about it...

Would at least one of those pieces be the lower hold down part? Maybe a pic? Thanks!

Here are the lower brackets from that 82.

The stanless steel plates are there. The holes you see in the plates were where the studs use to be... which over time... ripped out. I hope this picture helps you.

the louvers I'm working on are great. But they have a slight gap of about 1/2" on each side. Corse... I don't like this and am having a friend cut out a couple of pieces like this... but these are going to run up most of the verticle parts of the rear window.

Now I just need to find acceptable rubber grommits.

Thanks for the pic, those are different than what goes to the set of louvers I have. I bought them awhile back, nice shape, but only one of the lower mounts is there. The mount is sort of a compressed 'Z' shape with a spring loaded bolt running thru the louver to the mount. Have been casually looking for another, I have no idea what brand of louvers they are. Probably just gonna do the same as you are and have one made.

I'd like to see pictures of that McLaren, since the I6 was available from late 79 to 82, and according to one of Sandy's sites, the McLarens started production in 83. If it was a real one, it's probably one someone dropped an I6 out of a parts car into.

Ditto. The only 6 cylinder asc cars we know of are v6 cars not I6 cars.

Get pictures, the VIN and door/data tag info please too.

My guess is that it is one of the vert conversions. Either way, a rare find.

    Regarding the ASC....

Well... I did look it over for any sign of any ASC Mclaren badges but didn't see any. I also thought it was strange that the interior was basically the same as your standard Capri with no fancy Mclaren add-ons. The I6 was weird... but really didn't think much of it since I really didn't know when the ASC and Merc started their deal. The vert top looked like the same/similar to the ASC Mclaren verts top and that's where I kinda figured it was a Mclaren. Also, it was a stick if I remember correct.

Sorry to say though... the salvage yards out here do not alow cameras in the yards. But I have a small pen digi-camera and will take it along with me next weekend and take pictures of the car... IF it's still there. It very well could have been a proto-type/conversion type... but out here... once it's in the yards... it's VERY hard (and costly) to get them out.

I ran into one of those oddball 'verts last year in the junkyard.... Only one i've ever seen for that matter. It must have been one of those conversion companies before Ford offered a vert in the lineup. I'm pretty sure it was an '81 or '82 LX with a 6cyl. It was too far gone to save; but interesting to look at nonetheless....

jasen, the early style louvers were completely different, 100%. I have a set in my garage. I'm not sure that getting any pieces off them would help you out with a later set?

In a way... yes... they can help in my designing the ones I need. But these are just the little metal trim pieces that were attached to the window by double sided tape. I this case... it wont make a difference. I've already checked them out (roughly) with the louvers set on the hatch... and the brackets also set on the hatch. So Far so good. I'm just waiting for my window trim removal tool to come in so I can safely remove the hatches trim to do more measuring and finish my designing proccess. Although I took measurments at the yards... I just want to be sure I got it right be for I have my friend cut them with his plasma cutter. I may even make a mock up pair out of card stock paper to be sure I got this right.
