Performing a VIN swap is a felony. Ask me how I know...

Just get the title for your original VIN using a titling service.

I've used this one before. As long as the car isnt stolen, salvage, or has a lein on it then you are good to go. Take my advice and dont try to swap VINs.

They are awesome! That's how I got a title for my '84 Honda Interceptor. Not one single hassle from them or NYS DMV.

If you actually have a VIN already just work with the head office of your local dmv, I bought my car without a title and the local dmv told me that they would have to tow my car and auction it off and I would have to buy it back, then I called the head office, cop came out, inspected it and within 2 months new fresh title in my name.

Doesnt work like that in this state. No title means car gets impounded and then crushed.

Depending on your location, you may not even need a title for a car that old. A bill of sale usually suffices to transfer ownership. Of course if the vehicle is of some value you'd probably want a title...but I'm suspecting this isn't the case with this vehicle.

In my case it was because I didnt have the title and the VIN plate on the dash was missing. They were real close to crushing the car. I finally was able to get a title through ITS and then NY reissued a new VIN for the car. This whole process took 2 years and it stayed in impound the whole time.

There are certain states like Maine, New Hampshire, and Alabama that operate on registrations only for vehicles over 15 years old. Thats how the titling services work. You sell the car to them with a bill of sale, they register it in one of those states and sell it back to you with a registration that you then use to get a title in your state.

When I used ITS for my bike, the paperwork came back with a notarized bill of sale from Maine. NY issued me a new title with no issues.

If you loose your title, you can go to the DMV and file for a lost title. They then email a new title to the last titled person. If that's you, then you'll receive the title. If you bought a vehicle from someone that didn't have the title, when you file for a lost title, that seller will get the title in the mail assuming they titled the car last. I hope that makes sense.
