Default Whats the Best CFM rating for an electric radiator Fan??

I'm tired of hearing that damn flex fan I have under my hood on my '85 GT..( I know its not stock)
But when ever I stomp on the loud pedal all I hear is that Darn Fan!!

But I was thinking about switching Over to an electric...
But whats the best one for my V8?
I plan on maybe dropping the 347 I cant seem to sell , So I want a fan that will be enuff for that as well...
Moneys not the issue.... Preformance is

Flexalite Black Magic Extreme 180. Flows 3300 cfm.

If you are cheap, I use 96 or so Ford Escort rad fans from a pick n pull for like $12....

Lincolns, 94+ Mustangs, V6 vans etc all have very good electric fans...

Total BS. My car overheated with the black magic fan. It flows nowhere near 3300cfm. The factory clutch fan worked better.

The ford Taurus fan and the Mark8 fan are very popular fans. The 97-8 mark8 fan flows 4200sfm through a radiator. It blows leaves from behind my car when it is on in the driveway. Moves tons of air. My car with a new motor (which normally runs hot for the first few hunded miles), stock radiator, the a/c on and a 93* day ran no hotter than 185*.You can find them cheap at salvage yards or new they are like $150. You will need a bosch 75amp relay to wire up the fan. A 130amp alternator is a good idea with any elec fan. The 95 Cobra alt is a cheap find also. Easy to wire up.

    You did something wrong.

Plus the new 180 BM Extreme is even better (3300 cfm versus 2800)

I have heard a lot of people complain that the Black Magic fan is a worthless piece of junk. They all lived someplace hot. Others said that it worked fine, but they all lived in more temperate climates. BM fans taking a dump have warped many a set of expensive aluminum cylinder heads. I'll be using an SHO Taurus fan when I do this swap. Either that or one from a V6 Tempo. I have both kicking around.

    "should" being the key word.

I'd trust a 200K mile junkyard Taurus fan over a brand new Black Magic fan. :P I've just heard too much bad news about them. I think somebody said a new Mark VIII fan is only a buck and a half. If you want new, thats the way to go.

i've been using junk yard fans for years i've never had a mechanical problem with one of them in fact i've only heard of one electric fan failing but that was on a car with +300K miles so i guess it was due

i like the junk yard fans for several reasons:
they are cheap 5-10 bucks depending on yard
they have molded shrouds that can be modified to fit the car
they are usually easier to mount on the car (that zip-tie through the core trick is the worst way to mount a fan by the way)
to me its just more satisfying to take something and modify it to your needs

OK Ya right. Like what? It is only wired one way. It only mounts one way. ALL I changed was the fan everything else stayed the same. Now in 95 degree heat with the A/C on in traffic the car does not go over 185. The BM fan couldn't do that when it was 65 degree out.

The BM fans are barly enough to keep a stock car cool. Forget keeping a modified car cool. They rate the fan with out restriction, like a radiator in from to it. The SPAL, Derale(sp?) and OE fans are rated through a radiator. So the supposed 3300cfm of a BM fan and the 4200cfm of the later Mark8 fan is a huge difference.

I know personally about 10 people who used black magic fans and had overheating issues. They all switched to a Taurus, Mark8 or Ramchargers fan (OE Chrysler fan sold by Ramchargers for like $65). Heating problems went away.

The big car manufacturers put a lot on money into research for all operating systems in a car. That includes the electric fan. A OE fan is made to cool a car in Death Valley temps with the A/C blowing cold. The reliability and function of a OE fan is second to none.

I also have a hard time buying used electrical parts with a unknown back ground. But it is a chance you can take to save over $100.

I 2nd. the mark VIII cant say enough good things about it, had it on my coupe, weather here gets to 100-115 deg in the summer for almost 2 months , kept my car cool in bumper to bumper traffic .

Got mine used thru www.car-parts.com for $100 shipped to my door.

Never had the black magic, but only read its junk.

    Hope this helps

    i heard this....
    my friend said that....
    :P

I've sold 52 of the 150's this year. Exactly 1 warranty, the rest happy campers. Another guy burnt up the motor when his blower belt shredded and jammed up the blades....

Having said that... there is nothing wrong with junkyard fans, just too much BS about decent parts flaoting around...

Good feedback from an actual retailer , again, with the agressive climate conditions we have down here(extreme heat and high humidity),I went overkill witn the mark fan, and was satisfied with it, but be prepared to do some fab work to mount it and if you have a thicker rad , you will need a hammer and some patience to make some clearance for it.

Just because he didn't hear any complaints does not mean there were none. My fan "worked". It turned on and ran. It wasn't defective so why would I have called the supplier. Do a search on the Corral about BM fans. Not to many happy people there.

I don't really care what fan anyone else uses as long as mine works. Just posted up real world, first hand experiance on the question asked.
