Default New Cat, more @#$@#$ problems

I got my Catco "Direct Fit" cat #4159 from Summit yesterday..
This thing fits like crap.. it's 1" to long and they screwed up the band on the inlet pipe so the outlet is 3" to the right of where it should be.
not to mention that the hanger bracket it totaly missing.

Now I have to cut the inlet off the old cat and weld it to the new one.. .
I hate cutting up new parts..

I think Catco is going to be hearing from me.

Anyone in Denver have a bottle of C25 I can borrow on Sunday?
    My bottle is empty.

maybe I'll just get really pissy and weld it without gas.. It'll look like hell but it'll work.

Is this the Catco h-pipe? If so, I've heard of fitment issues. I'm looking for a high flow cat h-pipe for my car but will pass on the Catco.

Return it. The only 2 aftermarket cats I have had luck with are BBK and Bassani. I had problems with the Magnaflow. Catco is not even an option.

I wish it was an H pipe..

    85's have a single cat..

I'd convert to an H right now but I'd need to replace the intermediate pipes and get a double hump crossmember..
I'm not even sure the 85 headers would fit.

Well as it turns out the old cat was gutted..
I can't license the car till it passes emissions..

    No cat.. no tabs..

I was going to put the old gutted cat back after it passed but now I've had to cut that up to make the new one fit.

have you tried to pass emmissions with a gutted cat. alot of times non smog vehicles will pass the test but will still be required to run all the smog junk to be legal.

im so glad i dont have to worry about that stuff. first thing that goes on every vehicle of mine is the smog stuff.

my TBI chevy is so clean under the hood its scary.

I've tried to pass it 5 times now .. rebuilt\re-jeted the carb.. new plugs, wires, coil.. played with the timing.. tried the tricks like HEAT in teh tank.. priemum fuel, cheep fuel. full tank.. 1/4 tank.. nothing moved the numbers more than 5 points..

I didn't even know the cat was gutted till I pulled it off yesterday.

Here in CO they do an IM240 test on cars 82 and newer..
Thats a Dyno test. ranging from idle to 60 mph.

It's all back together now.. Re-jet the carb and it'll be ready to test on Tuesday.

If anyone cares I ended up cutting the entire inlet pipe off the orignal cat including the hanger hook. Then I cut the inlet off the new cat and welded it up..

The next hurdle was getting the air tube setup.. the stock tube was 3/4" OD tube that entered the cat at a 90 deg angle..

The new cat had a 1/2" OD tube that came out and ran parallel to the cat..

A little trip to HD fixed that up.. It turns out that a 1/2 copper pipe is 5/8" OD and is a perfect slip fit inside the stock 3/4" OD pipe

I picked up a 1/2 flare nut, a 5/8 flare nut, a 1/2 to 5/8" flare union and a few feet of 1/2" copper tubing.
I would have used 5/8" OD steel if I had a place to get some on a Sunday..

I put the 1/2 flare nut on the cat air tube then flared that with the Ridgid flaring kit and mounted the cat to see how the tubing needed to be bent..

Then we cut the stock air tube back so about 9" of copper pipe with a 45deg bend in it would slip inside and line up with the inlet for the cat..

Put on the 5/8" flare nut.. Flare it and hook up the two tubes with the flare union..

All done.. semi complicated but leak free and easy to remove for transmission service.

I've heard of people using 2-3 bottles of dry gas in the tank .
    I don't know if thats heat ?

They make a air tube repair kit .
It's flared on one side .
It's that green silicone hose .

Here if you fail , but have spent over $200 in repairs you can
    get a exempion certificate .

So I would spend $200 at Summit for other stuff .

    Good luck .

Yeah HEAT is the gas dry stuff.. It's just a bottle of alcohol.

here in CO it's $75 for 67 and older.. $715 for 68 and up to get an exemption and the repairs had to me made at a listed emissions repair facility.

Next time I buy a house I'm moving to a non emissions county
