Default 88 Lincoln V6 black smoke, help please

Ok, My brother inlaw changed the plugs cap and rotor on my mother inlaws car. I changed the coil later on. The fuel filter was also changed by him as well as the oil. After starting the car there is a thick black soot comming out of the tailpipe and it won't stay running at idle. You guys are the only ones I trust to give me the right knowledge, cause I'm tired of buying parts and her car still isn't out of my damn driveway. thanks guys, if there is anything else that you need to know, let me know.

Carb, CFI, SEFI? How many miles? I don't know about Lincolns, which V6 is in there?
The way you wrote it makes me think he messed up the wire sequence or moved the dist and the timing's horribly off
Or did he do the cap/rotor to attempt to fix the black smoke?

Its the 3.8 fuel injected, its an 88. The firing order is right, it runs fine as long as you hold the gas down, no funny sounds or puttering. Just black, and I mean, turned the grass black smoke out of the tailpipe. I don't know all the fi terms, but its the one with the plenum on top just like mustangs. but smaller and a V6. I don't believe that the timing was changed.

What kind of Lincoln? I assume you're talking about Continental.

Check the MAP sensor vacuum hose. They're known to break or disconnected.
MAP sensor are located on firewall...approx middle section of firewall. Vacuum hose are connected to upper intake manifold near throttle body.

Yeah look for a vaccum leak
    Or a manifold/plenum leak
    You can't always hear them
Pay close attn. to the elbow parts of the vac hoses

maybe it's the plug gap? could be not enuf gap to fully burn the gas??? which is what seems to me to be the cause of the black smoke

That can't be it, I was told it was the plugs with the 2 prongs, and as far as I know you can't gap those.

Well, you've got some heinously rich exhaust there
Either something is telling the 'puter to dump a tankerful of gas in the engine, or you've got cylinders that are not burning up the fuel

    Just thinking out loud here...
    Things that'll do that:
    Manifold/vaccum leak
    Switched/loose plug wires
    Wrong/broke distributer cap
Timing really off (like maybe 180*)(hey is this thing a belt or chain?)
    Wrong/crappy/ill-gapped plugs

Mechanical failure, try a compression test
Partial coil failure, that seems like a stretch but we're running out of stuff
There's a test for it or pull it and bring it someplace
    Check for TDC

    Hmmm...
