When I was trying to figure out my car, part of the discussion on negusms ASC McLaren site was that the production unit number in the VINs on Mustangs and Capris were for all FOX bodies together. The Capris just started with a 6 and the Mustangs started with a 1. It was also mentioned that Capri production was about 1/4 of Mustang production, which would make my low VIN GS about the 250-300th '85 Model year Capri made. I'm skeptical. Anybody know for sure?

If there were really only 96 cars built, you would be hard pressed to find one or 2 in such shart notice.

For example, find me 5 GT350 Turbo convertibles. Being collectible since new, they should have a lower attrition rate and should be easier to find. Right?

You will get to 4 and I already know which 4 because two different people own them. But finding the 5th will take a while.

No way were there only 96 virgin roof capri's in 86.
That is EXACTLY my point. Heres another example, there are MORE Crimson Cat cars (~800) and I have seen maybe THREE? And Crimson Cats are FAR FAR more distinctive!

Yeah I still don't understand it either. If you add up Mustang production and Capri production, there should be Capri vins in the 7xxxxx range....but there are not.

    Here are the vins found:
    615559
    617658
    617699
    620635

I would imagine if you knew the build dates you would find them near the end of the production run in 1986 (only like 20k units made in 86). What I can buy is that early in 86, Ford was pushing TTop cars....telling dealers only customer ordered cars would have solid roofs. Once the commitment to the TTop quota was filled for the vendor, they switched back to making whatever the dealers wanted.

That would be one plausable explanation.

    Capri Production Numbers

From the Illustrated Mercury Buyer's Guide:

    1986
    GS - 17,029
    5.0 Litre - 3,303
    TOTAL - 20,332

    ASC/Mclaren
    1986
    Convertible - 245
    Coupe - 115
    EuroCoupe - 47
    TOTAL - 407

OK, assume the 20,332 figure is positively correct. That does NOT mean the very first unit (Capri) made had CUN 600001 and the very last unit made had CUN 620332. You also cannot pinpoint the exact month a unit was finished by going by the build date on the VC Label.

I started a topic awhile back that relates to the CUN#
discussions and build dates. Just wondering their
    relationship to one another.{if any}
HERE: If interested. Post in link below
    http://www.foureyedpride.com/phpBB2/...ic.php?t=11616

I know,it's not written in stone. Not all cars were finished on
time because of problems in the assembly line.Surely others were
on schedule. My 86 has build date of 6/86 and i purchased it in July.

Capris in the last 5000 or so CUN#s?

I also noticed that last one is a larger number than the supposed number built.

Yep...maybe there were none (other than a handful of customer cars) built without TTops before 615500 or something like that.

    YYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS S

I had an 84 rs that i painted Dodge Copper and it had a sunroof in it. I loved how you could remove the sunroof and have a poor mans convertable.Plus if you seen my car at this point, you would say what the f..k did you do to it....It is completly gutted like on monster garage and i am getting the body smoothed, shaved, filled and all redone. It looks like a piece of trash right now but give it a year.Everything is being redone on it so the only original part will be the......um....front and rear bumper plus the taillights........the rest have been either upgraded or moddified.

It sounds like a great project and I'm looking forward to seeing it completed.

If you only knew how hard I was lusting for and searching for a no sunroof/T-top '86 Capri RS before I got mt '85 GS. I got a good car, but I still wish I could have found an '86 RS in similar condition for the same price.

Is that an original 5.0 86 Capri? I know from your sig, it should be...but just trying to make sure we keep things precise. That would be engine code M in your vin.

Give me a week or so to do some 'back tracking'. I've owned 3 1986 5.0 Capri's, two have been hardtops (no sunroof, T-tops) . . .I will try and dig up any remaining paperwork I have on the cars for their VIN numbers. I know the owners do not post on this site, so the VIN's shouldn't overlap.

Hello. Been busy with my Turboford and thought I'd add.

86 RS 5.0 car. fully loaded ( I think) hardtop. But an aod car. No pictures available. vin = 612226

Canadian car. Bought in niagra falls. 2nd owner .

I was the one ( I think) yacking about the 1-96 cars. When I bought it and was all happy and looking here for info on it, before i bought my trubofords. Found a post about some guy explaining , why a hard top is more desierabout for a 86 RS car. It was on the old board. before oct 2001. That I remember. I have it printed out actually. WOW.

It's from a e--z board capri world forum would forum dated 12/28/01 have the link but it's probally dead.

Capriiaz is correct When I ordered my 86 5.0 in oct of 1985 they didn't want to build the car. They kept asking me to take a t-roof or sun roof. I didn't want one. Seems they had a deal with ASC to install roofs in all capris. My owner of this dealership went to dearborn in Jan. 1986 and asked why are you not building this car? Ford cam back a couple days latter and said they would build the 96 that were ordered in one run and never build another one w/o a sun roof or t-tops. So this is how I know mine is one of 96.

I didn't write that somebody else did. Weather it's true I dunno.
