Default Anyone up to the challenge? The 96 in 86 legend....

There has long since been a legend that only 96 Capris in model year 1986 escaped with their roof sheet metal intact. We are here to see if we can prove without a doubt one way or another. Let the games begin!

Okay, here's what we need: a picture showing the roof of the car and the last six digits of the VIN. Further information welcomed, but not necessary. This is for 86 Capris only.

    Original Post:
Okay, so we're gonna flog the 5.0L/RS 85/86 issue, which is very interesting...so who wants to start tracking all the 86 Capris without sunroof or T-top options? The number keeps being bandied about, many of us don't believe it, some think it's gospel.

    So...who wants to join in?

    Skye,
I can help out, what do you need me to do ? I Have a White 86 5.0 5 speed with no sunroof or t-tops and get this no AC, the only option it has is power windows and i'm not sure if that came standard on the 5.0 package. Anybody have any ideals ? I ordered my history report a few days ago so i'll know more in a few weeks

Excellent idea. Mine is not an 1986, but I don't want to be left out. It is a 1985 GS badge/RS buck tag 5.0 with no sunroof and no T-top.

Post the last 6 digits of your vin too so we can keep them straight as I know of at least one car that has been passed around 3 times on this board.

Well, this is interesting. VIN#s are important to determine
atleast a theory behind this story.Maybe the DSO# would
    also be helpful.

    I do notice something strange on lx460 VIN# though.The
number he has is actually higher then the total production #
of capri's built for 86. It is the highest CUN I have seen. I would
like to see a registry where we can keep track of these vin's. I know
    easier said then done.

If you add the ASCs to the regular Capris, you get a total of 20739. I dunno...

They were 5.0 capri's before asc got them.Plus they
received a additional buck tag from them.

Remember other cars were intermixed with the vin numbers too. From my limited understanding, the vin number does not necessarily tell you exactly what # car in the series was made. There was somebody who posted a Mustang VIN that was also higher than the accepted production number. Looking into it, there are several cases of people posting vins like this. It isn't as uncommon as I had thought.

Yeah, I looked at it when he wanted 2 grand for it--drove almost 5 hours to see it-----was entirely too disappointed in it--drove all that way, looked for 10 minutes and drove right back.

But I got my 86 Mustang with 5 speed/no T-top, no Sunroof out of it.

Sorry guys, but with this many results in such a short amount of time, i am going to say its just a legend.

If there were really only 96 cars built, you would be hard pressed to find one or 2 in such shart notice.

For example, find me 5 GT350 Turbo convertibles. Being collectible since new, they should have a lower attrition rate and should be easier to find. Right?

You will get to 4 and I already know which 4 because two different people own them. But finding the 5th will take a while.

No way were there only 96 virgin roof capri's in 86.
