    Default Numbers

There are some cars out there with numbers (vin) etched into the windows. You could buy a kit to do it or many rental car companies did it as well. These etched numbers look like they were not made at the time the glass was made. Sometimes they did the wheels too.

That's not the last part of the VIN. For one, 0087459 is one digit too many and two, Fords start with 100001 and go up from there.

Dealerships sell an insurance program in their finance departments that pays for a car if stolen.
All cars get etched with a number.
When an insurance policy is sold, the etched number (not the VIN) is recorded and the insurance
    policy becomes active.
This is done today and I would imagine it is not a new idea.

I work at a dealership and we do it to every car that gets pdi'd, wether or not someone purchases the insurance.
Customer is not charged for the window etching, they only pay for the insurance policy if they choose to buy it.
Someday somebody will have their car stolen and it will pay off for them.
But like all insurance, the law of averages in in the insurance companies favor.
    ....... my guess

    bobw,
Do you remember them offering you extended warranties etc at the final paperwork stage.
If it is what I think- then they would have offered (should have) this at this time.
