I made it to the track the car weighed 3300 with me in it i ran street tires at 27 pounds and my best time was 14.572 at 94.955 i tred every thing to launch it but my best 60 ft. was2.20 it has headers ,performer carb and manifold ,z code rear end? (7.5")new clutch and the timming was set at 14btc :and the rest of the car is how i found it : my 6 year old and me really had alot of fun !! What do you think if I clean up the dbl. pumper 650 holley that came on it would it help or hurt? and what about new rear control arms to get my 60ft. times down?

well for starters i think you would pick up a bit going to a holley dp carb.
it has more tuneability to it. the afb that edelbrock now makes use to be a good carb but no one makes all the parts the use to for them and to find them its a head ake.

on timming total advance is more inportant than initial (14 btdc) advance. on total advance rev the engine to 3,000 rpm where is the timming at? i would stay around the 32 degree mark on total advance. if you dont have a timming lite that has a dial on the back you will need a timming tape to tell.

on 60's tires would be a big help. what kind of street tire do you have. i would look into a drag radial and run lower pressure about 15 psi or so.
slicks would also help. i would get better tires first before messing with the suspention.

something else to keep in mind your 7.5 rear end is not going to hold up long if you keep going to the track upgrading to a 8.8 would be a good start also. do you have a srod 4 speed or a t5 5 speed or is the car sutomatic? the srod 4 speed is another week link that will not last long under the stress of track time. building up the suspention and getting better tiresis only going to increase the stress to the formentioned parts.

getting the car stiff helps alot. the big holes in the roof dont help. ford did a wonderfull job renforcing the roof but still more needs done. do you have sub fame conectors? if not that would be first priority to get. are your torque boxes renenforced? that would be something i would also do. stress of tires and suspention will have an effect on the torque boxes. all that need done is weld them up. or you can buy the bolt in boxes on eby or else were cheap.

i know this is depressing information. but everything i have said can be done cheap. only problem is junk yard are running dry of 8.8's and t5's.
if you know a good welder or you can weld the torque boxes and sub frame conectors can easly be done. on suspention i have seen guys go fast of stock pieces. again if you can weld boxing the control arms is a big help. and only cost the price of steel.

for the best in suspention look for an double adjustable upper control arm. on lower control arms thier are so many good ones out thier it depends on what you want and what your willing to pay.

some other tricks is get a set of stock springs from a 4cyl stang. repalce the rubber bushing in the rear. good shocks and struts. an alumin drive shaft also helps i have been told aeostar mini vans had them. the engine k member from a 86 to 93 is a bit lighter than the older k member. escort gt seats look like early stang halo seats but are lighter. any weight you can get off this thing will help.

i hope this helps you out i have been thier my race car is a 82gt with t tops. good luck pat

My 85 Capri weighs 3460 with me in it and my best so far is 14.99 @ 92.03

My best 60 footers have been 2.20's but I haven't seen on in a long time, normally 2.30's. Seems the more HP I find the less I can get it to stick off the line and the latest problem has been with the secondaries openning quicker now and running more timing that at about 80 feet or more off the line in 1st gear it's break loose and turn them until 2nd gear.

So your runs are not bad. Approx what elevation are you running at?

From what I recall your car has A/C is that something you plan to retain? I wasn't sure if this car is something you intend to drive daily or regularly on the street.

A friend of mine who has built scads of Ford racing engines runs all his cams @ 106 centerline. He has told me that from his experience the FSB runs the best there. This is not EFI engines he is mentioning, but mild to wild carb engines. I have run all of the ones I have done since at as close to 106 as I could and I have been happy in doing so.

    Thanks for the info, Capri

I would love to have A/C, but I have removed a lot of it (did not work, etc.)

I need to get the relocation kit to get the rest of it off.. or change to a manual rack....

My next cam will be more unique... Much more unique.....

This was a cam that had .500 lift.. with my heads, I can support more... If I get better heads, I will utilize a better cam as well...

My guess - if I can get everything done - will be low 13's next year on sticky tires... I ~think~ I can pull a few more MPH as of right now... With the gears, I hope to see high 12's...... Maybe on a good day with just the right launch...

I was thinking with the 99mph you should be hitting the 13's solid with good traction.

Keep me in mind if you decide to get rid of all the A/C parts. I am planning on retro installing A/C in the Capri.

    thanks
