I read this thread prior to doing this job. Very helpful, but ugh! I'm currently changing out the heater core in my LTD wagon. What an absolute PITA. I'm taking 3 days to do it because I'll burn this car to the ground if I work on it any more than that, I just have to walk away after 2-3 hours. The Fairmont heater core was a piece of cake by comparison.

Note: If you are working on a column shift vehicle, be aware that the speedo cluster is attached to the steering column via a small cable that actuates the gear selector/indicator. The indicator needs to be removed from the cluster prior to fully dropping the steering column. There's 1 small screw retaining it to the cluster.
