Default timing for 85 mustang gt

I have an 85 GT with the 5.0 carb, I have the service manuals for my mustang but they do not tell the timing specs for my car. My vehicle emissions sticker is missing so I don't know the initial timing, and what the centrifigual advance timing would be and the vacuum advance setting. My manual states to look in the service performance manual for total advance at 2500 rpm/ vacuum advance connected and disconnected for the settings. by the way, anyone have a copy of an 85 Mustang Gt emission sticker? Thanks

    Default timing

I think most just set it by disconnecting and plugging the vacuum hose from the advance unit and setting it to 10 degrees for factory, or more for additional power. I run mine about 13 degrees and run 89 octane with no problems at all. This would set the initial timing. The total advance should be good if everything is working, unless you have reason to believe this to not be true. I think you can check by revving the motor and using the timing light after you have the initial set.

My 83 calls for 10. This is a good starting point. Check your mechanical advance while the vacuum line is unplugged. You should top out at around 30 degrees around 4500-5000 rpms.

I had my carb overhauled by pony carbs from NY, in the video they send they recommend setting the timing by turning the distributor to the smoothest idle and then driving the car and listening for ping..and adjusting it from there. They specifically recommend not using a timing light. Something about the harmonic balancer being ona rubber type mount or flange and it giving a little play over time so the true timing will be off. I will start at about 12 BTDC. Thanks

If you're just going to tool around town that will work fine. If you want to develop the most power possible from your combo you need to tune it. That means you might be static at 10, 12, 8 whatever is right for you but use a light.

If there is any question about the harmonic balancer being off. Roll the motor to TDC by feeling the #1 piston. when it get's to the top the mark shoudl be on 0. If it;s not you either did something wrong or it is off. I would try it again and make sure you are doing it right.
