    Default Later model ac installation

Hi, I just bought a 79 coupe and love the looks of it. It has ac and the cologne v6. I want to replace the dash and wiring from a 87-93. I also want to add the air conditioning from a 87-93. But, I’m not sure the firewall is the same. I think the firewalls were the same from 1982 on. If anyone has any information or has done this please lmk how you did It. Thank you

I think youir best bet is to sell your 79 to someone who wants a 79 and buy yourself a 87-93.....

No need to sell your 79 if its what you want.

My 79 Pace Car didn't originally have A/C. The firewall stamping is essentially the same from 79-93 with minor tweaks and differences. What I did was I made a template of the firewall opening from actually an 86 Mustang (still the same as 87-93). Then I used that template to cut the hole in my firewall. Then I swapped in all the HVAC equipment from a 1986 Model, I did use the correct A/C from a 1985 since my engine was not EFI. This allowed me to add OEM A/C using original and replacement parts with very little hassle.

The 87-93 A/C controls are very different from the 79-86. So if you are using the 87-93 dash and wiring, I would definitely use the engine bay A/C parts from the same basic years. There was a change in one of the A/C line connections I believe around 89 or 90 when Ford went from a threaded to quick connect or vice versa. I never can remember exactly, just be aware of that. As mentioned above if you are using a carburetor you will most likely need the 83-85 discharge line to clear you air cleaner rather than the 86-93 EFI style line that loops around the back of the EFI intake.

If you need most of the parts, the kits from LMR are pretty decent. I believe they also use a slightly more efficient condenser unit when making the switch to 134a over R12. Hope this helps! Good Luck! https://lmr.com/products/Mustang-AC-Conversion-Kits

Like Trey mentioned, pay attention to the compressor hoses you choose to use.

Your car, being carbed, may have hose interference issues if you use the 86-93 hose arrangement, which are designed to work with the efi motor's intake setup, not a good ole air cleaner setup.
