Default Fuel tank CFI vs EFI

Can anyone confirm that the earlier cfi tank was the same as the later efi version? Or maybe direct me to a good thread on the subject? I've read through several older threads and can't seem to find this.

Also, I'm wanting to use a cfi (efi?) tank in a 79. I know they're physically larger than the early tank, but I've read all you need to do is use longer bolts at the rear strap ends. I've also read that the spare wheel tub may need some work to fit (2lb sledge and zero $hts given). Looking for some personal experience before I go this route.

    Thx!

I used these to install my fuel tank.. Based on my install, I would recommend them.... they are a dorman part, but LMR has them too.....

EFI and cfi use the same fuel sending unit. Likely the same tank.

It says they are for 81+ so I don't believe they'll work on my 79. I don't recall how the strap setup is different, but I'll take a look at my 82gt which is sitting next to the 79 I'm working on to compare. I'll eventually need to deal with that tank, as well. Thx for the tip!

I'm pretty sure that's correct. Cone to think of it, I just remembered I have a newer efi tank in my storage shed. It came out of an 87-93 and has been sumped. I could use it for fitment. Sometimes I completely forget about some of the extra junk I have stashed away lol!

One difference is front mounting of straps to frame on 81 and later models. Pin style vs t-notch end.

I changed my CFI tank to EFI tank years ago. They were not exactly the same.

If I recall correctly,, the 1984 CFI tank had 2 openings - an opening for the fuel sender, and another opening for the pump. Separate units. I used an '89 tank and pump/sender assembly. The rest of the tank appeared to be identical.

With the change to later high-pressure pump in the tank I removed the in-line high-pressure pump under the car.

No worries at all! Still great advice! I have an 82 capri that will be needing a fuel system, as well! Thanks!
