    Default 2.3l turbo/automatic

I own a 1980 Turbo Cobra with 18,000 original miles. It has a 2.3L Turbo with an Automatic transmission. The fuel system has an electric fuel pump. Does anyone know how many of these were built. I can't find any specific production numbers.

    Thanks,

    FGM

    That is a nice survivor.
From my Marti report 4033 of the 1980 Cobras had the 4cyl turbo, 3699 of those had the std transmission.
So the other 334 would have the automatic transmission. All 4cyl turbo automatics came with the electric fuel pump.

I'm seeing that a total of 5,500 Cobras were made in 1980. That would be with all engines and transmissions offered on the Cobra.

Looks like 0F0 CBR narrowed it down for you though. Yours is one of only 334 Cobras produced that year that had the turbo engine with the slush box.

There were three transmissions for the turbo engine that year. A Borg Warner four-speed manual, a Tremec five-speed manual overdrive (available ~3 months before end of production), and a Ford automatic C3. So the 334 number was a combination of the five-speed and the auto. I haven't seen one yet with the Tremec five-speed.

TuxStang from France had one, a Mustang Cobra C3 Automatic DSO 89 Test Vehicle.

    See http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...T-Cobra-DSO-89

Confirming the electric fuel pump, it appeared to be a staged low lift pump in the tank, not a two stage Hi Lo system like the first CFi Foxes or the Panther Lincoln EEC III 5.0's from 81-84. Ford seamed to do proof of concept changes on specfic cars, and then roll out a whole system.

The Tremec T-142 should have been a legitimate option on the 1980 Turbo Carb M81, but it only appeared on mid 1980- 1982 non Turbo Capris and Mustangs. The turbo Carb continued in Canadian production for another year.

One guy here is FoxEngr, an ex Ford engineer on the project, and might be at liberty to talk. The copy book list of gearboxes Ford used in 1980 might not have received Turbo durability testing due to NVH issues, I remember specfic issues with the transmission dampener and an additional crash testing requiring a fuel pump sticker plate on the Carb Turbo engine. And a list of pilot build cars that were to have trialed test parts removed.

There was another power-train engineer who discussed the turbo 2.3 gearbox development and vibration and noise updates last year. Those guys normally hang out with certifications, so they have access to development info.

An earlier non EFi fuel engineer will help you out.

I am remembering some of my favorite test prototypes and press shows where we showed off the new cars- the 1978 Fairmont/Zephyr Z7- 1979 Red Mustang V8 4 speed - 1980 WhiteTurbo Mustang - 1980 Red Capri - 1984 Thunderbird - I was assigned to the Light Vehicle Evaluation team for the Fox Program. I still have a favorite picture of me standing next to the 79 Capri on the Ford Test Track. Many of the Ford people were excited about our cars and jobs.
The Vehicle Development group worked with prototypes about 1 year before production. We would try and improve things like engine response /ride motion and ease of operation. We worked out of the Experimental Garage and the Test Track next door. My job was primarily in Powertrain Evaluation. There was a different group that did engine calibration and Noise/Vibration/Harshness work. Thanks for your warm response to date. Roger

His dad is a retired Ford engineer as well. He worked at Ford for forty years. In the eighties he worked in engine development and SVO.

FoxChassis, unless I'm misinterpreting something, your data doesn't jive with 0F0 CBR's info. His Marti info derives that the 334 number was the number of auto transmissioned turbo'ed Cobras only, not a combination.

Bought it from original owner, just a bit over 18,000 miles. Has every option that was available except for snake graphic, everthing original, even brakes, the only things replaced were the tires.
