    Default '83 - 4 speed trans vs 5 speed

    Hey all,

Anybody know what date Ford stopped installing the 4 speed transmission in the '83 cars, and switched to the 5 speed trans?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

I've always understood the changeover to be 3/83. Foxchassis might have more details. Besides the updated trans, 5 speed owners got a 7K(instead of 6K) tach, and interestingly enough, a different style ashtray. The latter ashtray was a bit smaller. The SROD 4 speed continued on as a Credit Option.

    Thanks for the information.

Our car is a 4 speed. I got the "standard" Marti report, and it says the car was produced on Dec 20, 1982, 26 days behind schedule. I also have the OEM window sticker, that list's a $124 credit for the 5 speed. It does have the 6K tach.

    Interesting information.

It just so happens my car was also built 12/82, with the SROD and same tach. Yours must have a close Consecutive Unit Number to mine; 139XXX

I think some depends on the actual build location. My '81 Granada came with a clutch quadrant from the factory....
If the location ran through the old stuff they started using the newer stuff, potentially sooner than Ford anticipated.

You should be specific that you're asking about the 5.0L transmissions, because there was a five-speed manual behind the non-turbo 2.3L (Tremec 140VS) that goes back to the middle of the 1980 model year.

The Borg Warner five-speed T-5 started in model year 1983 production very early in November 1982. The Tremec four-speed SROD continued through the end of model year 1983 production.

We love that, but how does the Hummer Tranmission fit into all this!

What about the "Hummer" (Ford of Germany/FoG 4-speed) transmission?

FoG "Hummer" 4-speed (door tag code 7) was behind the non-turbo 2.3 only. It was replaced by the T-5 after 1986. The FoG 4-speed was not the only manual behind the non-turbo 2.3 through. The Borg Warner "RAD" 4-speed (code 6) was used in 79 and 80, and the Tremec "RAP" VS140 5-speed in 81 through 83.

    Non-turbo 2.3 manual transmissions:
    Ford "Hummer" 4-spd (7) = 1979-86
    Borg Warner "RAD" 4-spd (6) = 1979-80
    Tremec "RAP" VS140 5-spd OD (5) = 1981-83
    Borg Warner "1352" T-5 5-sp OD (2) = 1987-93
