    Default AC compressor noise

Swapped out what I thought was bad idler pulley, but noise is still there. Best I can tell, it is from
AC clutch area. Is there a bearing in there somewhere? Can AC clutch be swapped out
without removing compressor from car (and having to blow down refrigerant)?

Vid of noise (FYI, vid is 58 Meg)

Yes, there is a bearing inside the clutch assembly. Yes, it can be replaced without loosing the Freon. You don't mention which style compressor you have. Likely a special puller is needed to remove the clutch. Take the belt off and verify its bad by spinning it by hand.

I changed the bearing in my sons car. It was an 83 compressor 6P148 I believe.

Its not too bad a job and you can leave the compressor mounted on the bracket. I was able to wiggle/pry/punch the components apart without too much headache. They are a bit of a tight fit but not crazy. There are a couple snap rings holding things together. There are a couple good you-tube videos to watch as well if you search.

I ordered just the bearing from Rock auto but you can buy them in different places if you get the number crossed or you can replace the entire clutch assembly etc. I think there are two different ID sizes on the bearings so have to order the right one.

Thanks all for the replies. I did stumble on this vid after posting.

Good to know I can order just the bearing, as otherwise everything works fine
(at least it did last summer).
