Default LED - Turn Signal Replacements

I just ordered a replacement LED bulb for just about every spot on the car, minus the headlights and turn signals. I had done something similar to my old motorcycle, but I remember needing to install a new relay to prevent hyperflashing, which gave me pause here.

Has anyone here replaced the 1157 turn signal bulbs with LED’s, and if so, what was your experience with hyperflashing? Was a resistor or hack job necessary - or was it a simple plug and play?

    Cheers in advance!

    Thanks Zen!

    Two questions:
    - Have you used those particular bulbs without any fuss? Quick flashing is my main concern - If those work ok, any LED's would I'd imagine.

    - If so, Red? How is the color?

Have not used the LED 1157 bulbs so I don't know if they will quick flash.
You may need this for the bulb out warning display on the console.

I used all LEDs in my 79. I had a hard time finding an LED specific flasher so ended up using a standard electronic flasher and resistors on each of the four lights.

Bingo. That's what I was afraid of.

Maybe I'll buy some cheapo 1157's to try first, then leave them alone as incandescent if they blink like crazy.

I think something like this is the ticket:

I'm not willing to splice any wires, not worth it.

I was hoping for whatever reason, the old school setups might be more forgiving without them.

I just did it on my 85.5 SVO and my stock flasher would not flash the LEDs for the turn signals. (the 4-ways/hazards were no problem). I went to Autozone and got a "Novita #EL12" flasher and fixed the problem. My turn indicators and my 4-ways flash at the same speed. They do NOT hyper-flash. They flash the same as the incandescent bulbs did.
    I used "torchbeam" LEDs

I used this flasher with LED 1157's several times. On one of the cars (the 89?), I did need the reverse polarity adapter (included). The others I did not.

With LED headlight bulbs https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08P2Y43CD, I did need 2 diodes for them to function 100% correctly (dash hi-beam indicator stays lit other wise). https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UVR570/ Easy stuff.

I did switch the 3rd brake light back to regular bulbs, as the cruise control does not work with LED's in that location. I plan to switch back to LED's and a resistor whenever I get around to it.

    OH SNAP!

    Really??

Good to know. I put some LED's in there, but have not had a chance to test cruise control yet. This is a super good call out - I'll know what to look for should I notice any issues in the spring!

I'll owe you BIG TIME. I can't imagine ever thinking of that if/when my cruise decides not to work. Wow. I'm blown away by the level of frustration this post potentially saved me

I put some cheap Sylvania red 194 bulbs in the third brake light and my cruise worked fine.

Why would it affect the cruise control? Not being argumentative just a genuine question.

LED's require very little voltage to actually run. There are a few circuits that run through the brake light circuit to check integrity (like cruise control) so they create a little current draw.

That makes sense. CC checks that circuit to know when your foot hits the brakes to then turn it off.

Brilliant information @1986Saleen - Thank you

The cruise module also will not turn on if the brake lights are out all together.

    Follow up on this.

I went out for a short spin yesterday and my CC worked just fine with LED's in the 3rd brake light location. I'll be leaving them alone.

Looks like YMMV, but that does not detract from the helpful information and potential "heads up".
