    Default Speedometer bouncing

Installed new speedo cable, new speedo gear to match the rearend gears, now my speedometer needle bounces and dont read accurately. I'm pretty sure I have the wrong gear on the cable which is why it dont read accurately. But why does it bounce around? It never did this prior to installing the cable and gear...

Sounds like the cable is binding. These are pretty short cables though. Might want to pull the gear and see if it is messed up.

Sounds like the cable needs lubed. Did you lube it well before installing?

Try switching back to the old gear as a check.
Study both gears closely side by side and note differences. Rh or LH drive, end shape of tip.
Make sure cable end and gear are fully inserted and seated.
New driven gear could be slipping on the drive gear in the trans.
Speedo drive gear in manual trans is fixed to shaft with roll pin, which can shear.

My ranger speedo jumps like that in certain weather. Suddenly starts to move erratically and read very high.
Winds up either going back to normal in a few miles or pegging and sticking there.
Otherwise works normally. Using Garmin GPS as backup for speed data.
Will change out the speed sensor assy at the cable end at the trans one of these years.
Have never replaced the cable or gear.

We used to make the C1DD 17292A gear c-clip where i worked.
Each prob cost less than a penny to make. Ford bought them by the thousands.

I didn't lube the cable no, didn't realize it needed to be done?

Cable has nice swooping bends/curves. But I will double check it...

Sounds like we have the problem diagnosed ... There is actually a special grease for speedo cables...... I believe it has graphite in it.....

That speedo cable lube used to be quite common, but harder to find now.

There is a magnet that spins inside the speedometer, separated from a plate attached to the needle, which causes the needle to move upwards. Sometimes dirt will accumulate in the gap, dragging the needle to jump or peg.
