Default 82 Capri Side Mirror Trim Bezel. This can't be right ?

    Hello FEP'sters,

I have a 'new' 82 Capri for a few weeks now and still going through the car
to figure out the 'modifications' thats been done over the past 40 yrs.

One I keep scratching my head on is the trim bezel alignment for the Side View Mirrors.

The ones on the car just don't fit the way a trim piece should, don't seem to have the
right shape and not aligning with the one screw hole.

Seems the prior owner actually drilled another hole in the door frame so as to get this
    to somewhat mount.

Still the bottom tab that supposed to tuck behind the door panel or weather stripping
    stays well exposed.

Also these stick out well past the rubber molding, especially at the bottom.

Here are some pics of what I'm facing. Maybe these bezels are from another year or convertible
where the shape is different enough to 'almost' work.

Any one know if there is a difference in these bezels and if so, what should I be looking for?

    Thanks

Is this a T-top car? I believe there is a difference between the convertibles and hard top car windshields relative to the rake...which would cause this trim piece to be a different angle.

Indeed, it is a T-Top car.

There was only one part number for the interior trim piece for the mirrors. No separate part number for hardtop and convertible/t-top cars.
If they take my stapler, then I'll set the building on fire...

If you are talking about that little tab on the bottom of the adjustment bezel, yes they are exposed like that. My 86 GT without ttops, and my current 84 Capri with ttops both look like that. That’s just the way they were made.

Can anyone post a picture of what this looks like in other 'unmolested' cars?

    Thanks,

    Thanks,
I would be willing to wager that if you remove the screw from your inside mirror trim plate there will be two or more screw holes under the trim plate. I have seen many cars over the years where either the original screw hole is enlarged and the screw will not hold anymore or people just don't install it correct to line up properly and the end up drilling a new hole. Your trim plate does not appear to be seated properly as in the picture above. Most likely if you do seat it properly it will line up with the original screw hole and once repaired will look just fine. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the pic bwguardian, as that’s what i was thinking
    that should look like.

I did pull the drivers side off as wraithracing suggested and
indeed there are 2 holes behind it. So will try and get this
sorted over the weekend, as the mirrors need to be tightened
    also.

Thanks all for your time and info.

1- Looks like butyl putty was used to patch things, probably not helping parts align and seat correctly.
If the rubber sections are in good shape but won't align, that stuff may have to be cleaned out to reset everything.

2- The window glass run rubber, next to the mirror, looks like its not seated into it's door channel.
Looks ok in the first pic, but crooked in the middle pic. Or is that just a T-Top car thing?
Might want to check that. Grab a big screwdriver or stick into the rubber channel and push the strip back into the door channel.
Helps to shine a light in there first to see what's what and check for a bent channel or something.
Rubber seam can be rejoined with 3M 3602 black super w/s adhesive applied just prior to the push.

Can use butyl as filler to patch minor rubber damage once the window mirror plate and whatever is correctly reinstalled.

    When tightening the mirror nuts:
1/4" drives or a nut driver work good.
If removing the mirror nuts, add a dab of putty inside the socket to hold them. They like to drop into you know where.
