Default AOD to 5 speed swap 1985 GT using 1984 5 speed

So I am in the beginning stages of swapping out my AOD to a 5-speed.

The 5 speed came out of a 1984 SSP car and is being rebuilt now and strengthened and a cobra kit added.

My question is, did I make a mistake by going with a 1984 tremec? I read the first gear in 1984 was geared differently than in a 1985, but was curious if it being a SSP car, the gearing would be better.

    Thanks in advance,

    Drew

This would probably do better in the tech section(s).

I assume when you state 1984 Tremec you mean the Borg Warner T5 that was original to the 1984 SSP?

Tremec bought the Borg Warner T-5 transmission series later. 1985 was the first year for the World Class T5 in the Mustang. So unless the 1984 SSP is a very late model T5 it probably is a NWC T5. So the short answer is the 1984 T5 is not the best option in regards to Mustang T5's. That doesn't mean its junk, just generally not as strong as a WC nor the later models with the improvements and upgrades. Depending on how you drive and the amount of HP/TQ your 1985 will have, you will most likely be fine to use it.

Here is a good resource for verifying the transmission information. https://www.5speeds.com/t5/

The 2.95 versus 3.35 first gear will work better for you depending on your gear in the differential.

If you're putting a Cobra upgrade kit in it you're basically replacing everything but the housing and the output shaft, so the gearing it in now doesn't matter.

"Cobra" (WC) parts will not work in a NWC case.
