Length belt standard V8 w/o airco is not 83.5"?!
I run a 2128mm/ 83.77" Gates belt.
The tensioner is at the 6 o'clock position. Belt almost touches itself.
What length do you run on a 79 car?
I do use an air pump replacement wheel , can't come up with the correct name LOL.
Rest is all stock.

Measurements with rope: 2090mm when rope is in straight line from alternator to p/s pump wheel.
So belt must be between 2090 and 2128mm.
2128mm =83.77
2121mm=83.5
2090mm=82.3

2120mm fits just fine.
Just a hair shorter than 83.5 inch.
Boy, what a difference 8mm length makes.
No more slippage and weird sounds.
