    Default bad smelling after shutdown?

I have searched and not really found the info I am wanting on this issue.

My '84 5.0 reeks of fumes after shutting down. I mean bad enough I have to leave the garage door open for 30-45 minutes to vent the fumes.

The car doesn't have any of the factory exhaust on it and while running it doesn't have the same knoxious fumes.

Is this a air/fuel issue or just an old car thing and how do I fix it?

Or the fuel evaporating out of the carb bowls. Does it go away after a short time? and or does it take several revolutions to crank the car up? Like the carb needs refilled?

Is it carbed? What is the smell? Gas? The stock fuel lines have some real questionable connections....

Do you notice if it is towards the front of the car, or the rear?

Yes it is carbed, but doesn't smell like gas at all...It is what I would expect carbon monixide to smell like

The smell lingers in the garage for a long time. The car starts right up on first crank everytime unless I haven't started it in a few days then the initial start up takes a couple cranks

A buddy of mine gave me an idea that possibly the smog tubes are not properly capped off...I will take a look at that

interesting. CO has no smell so your imagination doesn't need to be great for that. Is it a smell you might think is associated with poorly operating cats? I could imagine a situation where your cats are doing a bad job for whatever reason, and your airpump line to the cats (if you have one) is allowing that smell to permeate up into the motor area.

There is a vent line from the gas tank ( at least there is on my 83) That plugs into a carbon canister which bolts to the passenger side of the engine compartment, down low almost touching the radiator... I was going to remove my canister, but most say this is a good way to vent the tank...

Would be a good place to check but I don't have cats on the car anymore. I think I am going to get under the car, make sure the headers and h-pipe connections are tight and cap off the egr stuff at the back of the motor and go from there

Do you mean the secondary air pipes? That could be it if they are no longer hooked to anything.
