Default Reproduction Fairmont and Zephyr dash pads!!!

A year or so back I was googling online trying to find a good used Fairmont dashpad - or if any reproductions were lingering out there. I didn't want a glue on cap. I ran across an old thread where a company in Las Vegas had mistakenly made some Fairmont pads a few years ago. They bought the tooling from Ford thinking it was all fox Mustang. Some of it was, but the Fairmont tooling was in the lot also. Excited, I contacted the company (Universal Urethane/Dashes Direct). I talked to a guy there, Justin. He told me the story I mentioned about how they came to have the Fairmont tooling. He said they tried to sell the Fairmont/Zephyr pads but they were hard to get rid of and the tooling was in storage. I seem to remember seeing these on eBay a few years back....hard to believe they were a hard sell! Anyway, Justin was going to make me a pad but things happened there at the company and it was put on the back burner. That was a year or so ago. A few weeks ago, he contacted me and had a pad for me!! I was anxiously awaiting its arrival to see how good it was. It is spot on!! I am thrilled with my new dash pad made in the original Ford mold! I had told Justin that if he would make me one, I would post on here and try to drum up some more business for them. He says he will make more....so here's your chance folks!! Don't miss this opportunity to finally get that reproduction dash pad you've been waiting on for your Fairmont/Zephyr. This is the one with the rounded corners for the standard gauge set. This is not the Mustang style square corner pad for the Mustang style gauges that some F/Z's had or have been converted to. I have included a couple pics of my new pad so you can see just how good it looks. E-mail Justin at justin.a@uuilv.com or call him at (702) 643-3626 x229. Please tell him that you read Kerry's post so he will know I did what I said I would do.Name: IMG_0874.jpg

I recommend posting in the "other 4 eyes" section - http://vb.foureyedpride.com/forumdis...Fox-Discussion. Probably get more exposure there.

Actually, the story is Ford gave them the wrong design for the first mustang repro dash pads. No one seemed to notice until they tried to sell them. I even saw one on display at the Ford licensing booth.

Glad to hear they kept the tooling. Beware, they will probably have the same issues as the mustang version.

Hmmm, bummer to hear it's got issues. Will subscribe to this thread to see how things develop.

Well if it’s urathane, it might be heavy, floppy and wavy.

Also the urathane ones are not paintable.

All of this is based on the mustang version from the same supplier.

Thanks for the clarification about the tooling story. I'm happy to tell you that there are no issues with this pad. I'm picky (Fearnot can vouch for that). You can't tell it from the car I stuck the pad in to demonstrate, but I only want good stuff. This pad has the hard plastic core just like the original and the outer finish is like an original pad (correct corinthian grain and everything!). It is not floppy, heavy or wavy. It is like an original pad. I wouldn't promote it if it wasn't good. I haven't dyed/painted it yet because I'm thinking about going with a black dash in that car (like an ES). This is a pad manufactured in the past month.

Well maybe they invested all the right resources when they did the wrong mustang pad on the first (failed for mustang) version. I think everyone was disappointed with all the mustang repos versions. There would seem to be no reason why it could not be done as original OEM.

Good to hear it was done right.

Glad to help out!! The pics I posted are in a Zephyr 2 door box! My second car was a 1980 Zephyr 2 door box (in 1986). It took me through 4 years of commuting to a local university. I've always had a soft spot for these cars - from my original love of Falcons (got one of those too). I was 10 when Fairmonts came out and to me they were the second generation of Falcons. I've owned one (or more at a time) of some sort since 1986. I'm all about keeping these cars alive. It is exciting to be a small part of this dash pad reproduction. Thanks to Dashes Direct for answering my pleas!

    SCFutura,

Trying to see if you mean it would or would't fit correctly with my gauge setup?

The gauge packages interchange. The dash pad is the same for either.

Thought so. The OP said it didn't work in Fairmonts with the "Mustang style" instrument cluster. Mine has the two small plus 4 satellite gauges so wasn't sure if that's what he meant. Oh, and I second the question on pricing?

For what it's worth, the Mustangs/Capris use the Fairmont/Zephyr dash hull, so you can use a Mustang dash pad also. 99% won't notice the difference, for that picky 1%, you can tell them, "Of course, I upgraded to the Mustang dash."

Dr. Matt, yours has the correct dash pad. It is a Mustang one, but that's correct for F/Zs with the 6-gauge cluster. Mine had the same one. The one that's just become available is the F/Z one for cars that came with the 2-gauge cluster. They are a tiny bit different, but either cluster will fit with either pad. Why did Ford do this? Who knows!

Brad! Really??? When they installed the 6-gauge cluster, they installed a Mustang dash pad? Really?? Why would they do that? Why would they have two different dash pads?

The only difference I’ve ever known is that the F/Z pad has a smooth slope from the top front edge over cluster to the windshield where the Mustang pad has a small step down about 3” from the front edge. Are there other differences?

Yes, but can you guarantee that your Zeph didn't have a cracked pad that was replaced by a much more obtainable Mustang pad?
