    Default SVO EH Build

Hello all. I purchased a 1986 SVO this fall much to the chagrin of my better half. The car was nearly rust free but tired. I always thought they were neat and always wanted one. Little did I know exactly how difficult it is to find parts for them. I hope to get some help as I build this car. The rebuild won’t be nearly as expensive as my Pace Car if I want to stay married. The plan is a basic drivetrain overhaul, paint and interior work. Expected build timeline is 12 to 18 months.

The car is originally from Edmonton Alberta so it’s pretty local to my area. While the car is relatively rust free, it must have been used as a bumper car at some point in its life. Every panel has some damage (mostly easy to repair) with the exception of the front bumper.

Attached are a few pictures of the SVO. I do have the original wheels and tires but was trying my cobra wheels. Unfortunately they are too wide in the rear and will have to look for something else.

It's awesome to see an SVO being cared for, gonna be watching this build for sure. I have two pair of sail panels and a near perfect bi-wing if you need them.

It looks like a solid start. That's half the battle.

Your SVO is in much better shape than my 84.

Looks like a solid car to start with. The front bumper cover doesn't look too bad in the pictures. Mine has peeling paint from a crappy repaint that will require stripping to the base to make sure it doesn't come back and bite me in the backside. Good Luck!

This is going to be a fun project. I like the stock SVO wheels, wish they showed a little more of the disc brakes though. 18mo minimum and a closet boneyard full of parts you bought and end up not using, lol…… good luck with your build

I was hoping for better weather this break but no luck. This morning it was -35 so my plans were modified slightly.

I found a 1986 turbo coupe engine that was partially rebuilt. It’s at a machine shop right now. I couldn’t find out if the cam specs were different or not so I ordered a new factory unit that will arrive next year. Attached are some pictures of the the car as I am disassembling it.

I managed to paint the engine bay and install the parts back in before our cold snap.

Take VERY good care of those front lights. Also be gentle with the header panel.

I always liked the SVO’s. They were ahead of their time. I test drove 1 in ‘86 and loved the handling but once I felt the torque of the GT I went with the V8. SVO’s are truly in a class by themselves and should be appreciated more. Looking forward to your build.

Thanks everyone. The header panel is cracked but repairable. I took a better picture of the engine compartment.

Jturbo, I hope to get good information from you.

In the meantime, I have a few updates for everyone.

The first picture is of the ceramic coated manifold. I don’t know how robust the product is but thought it was worth a try. It’s from Zybar and you just spray it on. There are some YouTube videos on it and seemed pretty straightforward.

Next up is the removal of the side spats. I purchased a set from SVPU because I heard the originals disintegrate over time. They will need some fitting but overall pretty good quality.

I sent my turbo for an overhaul a few weeks ago. There was more damage to it than expected. The bill is $1600 Canadian pesos. So now I am looking for a rebuilt or rebuild able one. I posted looking for one so please help out if you can.

I’m going to call boport to see if their turbo will work for me. We’ve emailed back and forth but experience tells me a phone call works best.

This weekend I told my wife I wanted to strip and she didn’t bat an eye. She must be used to my car obsession.

It was unusually easy to strip the car. I am aware that some of the car was painted complete with what appears to be lacquer cracking. It usually takes three attempts to strip the paint. In my case, it took only two attempts.

When I stripped the car, I was surprised at how much corrosion was on the surface. It just goes to show you why stripping down to bare metal is important.

The area under the spoiler was quite pitted.

Good progress, stripping paint is a real PITA, especially chemically.....
