    Default 17in rims on 86 4 lug

Just wondering if this is true. Looking to buy new wheels for 86 GT ( I'm not doing the 5 lug conversion) I'm looking at 17x9 front 17x10 in the back. From what I'm seeing u need spacers for the front and might need to remove the quad shocks from the rear. I'm just wondering if anyone has done this and know if it's true.

You may have to remove quad shocks depending on the tire size, but you shouldn't need spacers up front. If you're buying 17" 4-lug wheels, they're most likely going to be made for our cars and therefore have the correct offset.

Most 17" 4 lug wheels are made for the 87-93 V8 spindles and therefore require an 1/8-1/4" spacer on the front spindle to clear the strut housing. Every car is different depending on the mods that have been done, so you may or may not need the spacer. I would plan on at least an 1/8", but you can always test fit and decide from there. Good Luck!

Good info, Trey. I didn't know about the early spindles causing issues with the aftermarket wheels. I have 17" wheels on my pace car, but they're 5 lug (sn95 spindles) so this doesn't apply.

In addition, a Mustang with a 1986 k-member is going to have each FCA hole on it moved inwards about 0.5" compared to a 1987-93 V8 k-member. That is going to affect clearance between the outer tire sidewall and the fender lip. It will also make the inner tire sidewall hit the swaybar sooner, when the steering is turned. For optimal fitment, an even thicker wheel spacer will probably be needed.

Before buying any wheels, the OP is going to be better off in the long run to convert the car to 5-lug. This will give them vastly more wheel options and access to many other better parts for the brakes.

I have OE racing 17s I use for autocross. Besides the tires listed below I have had 275/40s on the back with no issues. Quads all there. Completely stock except for the Ford performance springs that dropped the car about 1/2 an inch.Name: PXL_20210522_185110957~2_copy_1600x623.jpg

I did flip the quads for the 275s. No spacers, 4 bolt pattern.
