Thread: Header Question

    Default Header Question

    Hello All,

I picked up an old-school style H-pipe for my 85 GT. It's about 4' 8" long and the tube connecting the long sides is about 4" in length.

Am I correct in saying that I need shorty headers to make this work?

Related, can anyone point me to a diagram of a typical 86-up Foxbody exhaust system?

    Thanks much.

I am a little confused by your question, but I will try and answer.

Here is a picture of the exhaust system for a typical 86-93 Mustang.

The only real difference for you is the true dual exhaust instead of the Y pipe from the headers to single cat to splitting off into the dual rear pipes again.

The 85 exhaust headers are unique due to the hot air tubes for the air cleaner and the exhaust flappers at the connection to the Y pipe. So in order to use the 86-93 H pipe style you will need the later model style OEM headers or any of the aftermarket short tube headers available.

I assume you need the shorty headers if the H pipe setup has the traditional ball/socket ends on the pipes. If the pipes are short and flat with now kick up to the shorty headers than that is a long tube header H pipe and often use the traditional 3 bolt collector flange connection. If you post a picture that might clear up my confusion. Hope that helps!

Did this on my 85 GT also, it's easier to pick up a set of 86 up shorty headers, then the H-pipe will bolt up.

The long tube on my car hit everything. Big mistake, definitely should have gone with shortys.
