The 80 cobra is like a repainted pacecar .
About the same thing . (body wise)
79 cobra is unique to it's self .
That might be why its 79 only .

    I think the 82 gt has a 79 type hood scoop .
I guess the 82 gt is close to what you said .
I think the 80-81 cobras look better than the pacecar .(do to color)
Most people forget the 80-81 mustangs , cause of lack of factory 5.0 .
Do you have any pics ?

While the 80 cobra was being designed , Ford needed something for
    the race .
So they used it , just with different paint and decals .
The called it a pacecar .
The 80 cobra idea was first .

Very nice Cobra! What's it run? I'm guessing 11's?

As for the '79 Pace Car/'80-'81 Cobra/'82 GT's, well, three original '79 Pace Cars were at the race. Each was specially built to pace the race, and were not actual production units. Ford knew that these would be hot sellers to the public, and produced approximately 10,400-11,000 units (depending on what literature that you read.) The '79 Cobras were unique unto themselves, as they didn't have the front airdam/foglights, full length hood scoop, or rear spoiler. Approximately 7,000 units were sold.

In 1980-1981, Ford pretty much incorporated the '79 Pace Car and the '79 Cobra into one package, and continued to call it the Cobra.

In 1982, the Cobra name was dropped, and the GT was reborn, complete with the '79 Pace Car/'80-'81 front airdam/foglights, and rear spoiler. The hood scoop however, was changed back to the '79 Cobra piece.

Edit: I must be blind! I asked how it ran in the quarter. After seeing your screen name, I now know that it runs 10's.

I'll get the vin # off of my 79 Cobra, sadly it is unsalvagable. It was totaled by the first owner in 80 or 81 with 15,400 original miles .
