    Default SEM interior paint questions

Hey Guys, I'm ordering some SEM Canyon red interior paint from NDP and as they have 2 different types and I was wondering which is the better one to get? The one is labeled as a low luster amd the other is under the semi gloss section? Also, I will be painting over original blue hatch plastics so I was also wondering if anyone else has done that and how it turned out? Will it cover the blue and look somewhat original? Will one can per side be enough?

I have not used the Canyon Red, but I have used the Scarlet Red on a later model interior. Coverage was pretty good, but that was going over the original red and not blue. I know I bought 3 cans for the interior and have a little of the 3rd can left. You might want to consider 2 cans per side to be safe if going over a different color.

As for the sheen, that personal preference. The low sheen should definitely be considered for dash pads to lessen any glare from the sun. Other than that, it's up to you and your desires. Good Luck!

Ok, so is there a way I could safely take some of the blue paint off the panels? Paint thinner? Etc? Maybe that might help with the red covering it?

I used the low luster on some kick panels and seemed too flat for me.

If they are original blue then they were not painted. They are molded blue plastic.

I used SEM 15273 Nappa Red, it seemed like a perfect match for my interior. There's a link below with the painting I did on mine if it helps at all.

Here is one piece I painted today with the napa red. It was grey. Turned out pretty good I think.

So just a update, I did my back hatch plastics with the napa red. It looks nice although I'm not sure how much of a match for canyon red it is. I know the door panels have faded over the years but the napa almost has a purplish tinge to it. Still looks good but I'm going to have to paint my door panels to match.

The first picture highlights the difference, the second they both look very similar in color. Keep in mind that truthfully most of the interior didn't actually match when brand new in 1984. Ford quality was iffy at best in this regard. Hard surfaces were generally one color, soft surfaces were a shade or two off and semi-flexible surfaces were often a third shade of the color. Honestly one of the reasons I never liked the Sand Beige color back then, the difference was significant in most cases. The black and grey interiors seemed to have the least differences in color with blue being a close third.

When I used to do a lot of SVO repaints and refurbishes, I would always repaint/redye all of the interior parts and pieces to help everything match rather than have the different shade throughout. I promise you most people will not notice slight differences and shades once it's all put back together. Good Luck!
