    Default Mystery alternator

84 ltd lx, I recently purchased a 347 that came with a March performance serpentine set up. The 5.0 that I removed was out of a 1989 Mustang GT and the alternator hookups were identical to the original. I am not sure what I have now, I contacted March Performance and they say it is a one wire alternator and to plug the wiring holes. Any ideas. The pics are pretty poor.Name: thumbnail_IMG_1009 (1).jpg

One wire alternators only need a large cable to go from the red ring terminal to the positive battery cable or the positive side of the starter terminal. That is what I have in most of my Fords including my 86 Bronco now. Very easy to wire up and work very well. Just size the cable accordingly. 10 gauge cable is generally the smallest you want to go and I often go larger than that to be safe. 6 gauge or 8 gauge work very well. Good Luck!

My ltd still has the external regulator, does it need to be connected?

No the only connection for the alternator will be the single wire to the battery/solenoid. The rest of the wiring can be disconnected and left in place if you want. The alternator is self regulating and so therefore will not need any of the other wiring to operate correctly.

That makes sense, the alternator is charging the battery, and power to the solenoid. Anything that is wired to the solenoid is getting power, but for example how is the fuse box getting power?

As stated you can run the charging wire from the alternator directly to the positive battery post or connect it to the positive side of the solenoid, same as the postive battery cable. All depends on what works best for your situation. The Fuse panel gets power from the starter solenoid. Usually the large yellow wire that runs back into the passenger compartment. That yellow wire will branch off going to the ignition switch on the column as well as to the fuse panel. At least that is how most of the Mustangs are wired. I would assume the LTD would be very similar.

The alternator is single wired to the solenoid and charging. Since I have by passed the original alternator harness, the charge light on my instrument panel stays on. Is there any way to hook up the light or bypass the light?
