    Default Mahwah Bucks!

Mahwah Bucks: they're not a sports team in New Jersey!

I was going through some of the VIN / Buck Tag / options research on this forum (most of which has been done by FoxChassis, who is working pretty hard to gather info on the various four-eyes, so this is both a shout-out and a bit of research to help him with that effort).

I noticed that there's not a lot of info on Mahwah, NJ-built 4-eyes.

This is probably because they were only in operation until 1980, and didn't build Mustangs or Capris. Foureyedpride is one of the few forums that is likely to have interest in the Mahwah cars at all.

So, if your car was built in Mahwah, NJ (second digit of VIN is E, so it would be 8E..., 9E..., or 0E...), I would love to see buck tags, door stickers, and any other documentation you've got. I will be compiling what I can and trying to correlate the various stampings of the buck tag, to the various build options. Eventually, I'd like to get it added to FoxChassis's buck tag decoder, if we can get enough tags in there.

The 1978-1980 "Other Early Foxes" are getting thinner and thinner on the ground, and I worry that if we don't gather this information soon we may not ever be able to. I would really appreciate any info I can get to contribute to this; and if I can offer anything in return (I've been trying to think of things) I'd certainly try.

For what it's worth; not just for our cars: the Mahwah buck tags are fairly unique compared to the other plants. The information on them is placed differently and the formatting is unlike most of the other plants; and since they closed in 1980 and most of their production was the bread-and-butter cars (full-sized Monarch, Granada, wagons, older LTDs, and so on) there aren't a lot of preserved buck tags compared to what we've seen in our community. This project might help out some of the even-less-well-represented old Ford owners out there.

I'm no help, since my car is an '82, but sounds like an interesting project. Have you found forums (or FB groups) for some of those other models to try to cast a wider net?

I've never heard of Mahwah. Was it poss. that Mahwah was a replacement, in theory anyway, to the plant in Metuchen? FoxChassis might know.

Interesting side note; "A two-door, cream-and-tan-colored Fairmont Futura became the last of 6 million vehicles to roll of Ford's Mahwah assembly line as the 25-year-old plant shut down Friday..." The New York Times, April 25, 1982.

    EDIT:
Wow, Metuchen was online from 1948-2004, not bad!

Mahwah Assembly was open 1955-1980 and it replaced Edgewater Assembly. That's according to Wikipedia.

If Mahwah closed in April 1982 that would have been about 3/4 of a model year. I have no tags from any 1981 or 1982 F/Z made at Mahwah. The F/Z was also produced at three other plants.

Here is a chart of all Foxes and their (known) assembly plants.

Patrick: I've looked a bit but haven't taken too much interest in non-Fox bucks from Mahwah, as the tag info would be of only tertiary use in correlating buck info to vehicle construction.

Bryan: Metuchen opened with the advent of the Escort/Lynx about the time that Mahwah closed. I believe there was some overlap as Mahwah shut down and Metuchen started production. I'm not aware of (although I could be wrong?) any production from Mahwah after 1980, but I'm still researching.

Mahwah was some 50 miles away from the Edison/Metuchen plant. With the Metuchen plant in town, it’s lifetime was probably limited. The Mahwah plant was built in a mostly undeveloped area of northern NJ. I doubt one was a specific replacement for the other.

I have about 10 Capri/Mustang VINs and door tags from Mexico, only from 1983 and 1984. Nothing from any other Fox. I don't even know how the Mexico VIN breaks down, otherwise I'd add them to the VIN decoder. As far as I'm aware the cars built in Mexico were for Mexico. No import/export across the border in either direction. They had laws on the books at the time (maybe still do?) that a certain percentage of a each sub-assembly of a car, and the car as a whole, had to be built in Mexico for it to be for sale there.
