There is a wire on the back of my of the dash cluster that appears to clip on one of the posts on my 79 Mustang. Was this the from the factory? Which post should it be on for the tach to work?
Thanks
Bob

The tach wire should be in the instrument cluster pigtail. If the tach is original and OEM there shouldn't be a wire clipped to any posts. It's possible there was an issue at some point and a PO rewired the tach to operate either due to a break in the wire, a bad printed circuit board, or possibly an added non OEM tachometer. Pictures would be more helpful in order to determine what is going on with your Mustang. Good Luck!

I'll get a picture when I take it apart. I agree it's probably a fix from a PO. Would the wire go on the post closest to door or closest to the console?
Thanks
Bob
I honestly would have to look at the back of a cluster to make sure. I don't think the tach is any different on the 79 model, but also just be aware that the printed cluster on the 79 is different than the later models. I think its 79-81 or 79/80, but its been awhile since I dealt with my 79 PC cluster, so my memory isn't as clear.

Will I hurt it if I guess wrong and just fire the car to check it?
I guess it would depend on if the wire is actually off the negative side of the coil or is a 12+ wire from somewhere else. I will try and take a look at one of my spare clusters tonight when I get home from work.

Hi, this may be connector C-519 which is not related to the Tach, it is for the fuel gauge.
Take a look at page 3 of the 1979 schematic section B-11
http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...79-1986-in-PDF
1979 uses it, my 1980 has the C-519 connector in the wiring harness but it is not plugged to anything.
What is the wire colour? Black with LG dash?
It's a black wire.....and I don't have a wire to the fuel guage, so I agree that's where it goes.
Thanks
