Hey all -
I was just wondering what the best product to keep the satin black trim looking good. I'm getting a whitish oxidation film with it being parked outside. Will Back to Black do the job, or is there something better?

Back to Black is marginal. Only lasts for a bit, requires several coats before streaking ends. There are better products. I researched last year but I’m not sure if I bought the right. Mothers and Meguires are not great. I’ll have to look into again.

Hi Bryan, Are you talking about bare unpainted black plastic pieces or deteriorating painted pieces?
The replacement fan shroud I put in the Tangerine car was oxidized decently. I used a Meguires product that gave so-so results. To a discerning eye, you can still see the deterioration but it did give some color back.

I'm talking about the black painted surfaces...grille, headlight buckets, etc. My car was a garage queen when I bought it, but since mine is currently stored outside, time and weather have dobe their job. The paint itself hasnt deteriorated, but it is oxidizing a bit. Washing alone doesnt seen to affect it.

Keep in mind, the black trim paint is really the primer coat on the bumpers. You don’t want to get too aggressive.on another note, the body side moldings are solid black and can be sanded and or repainted with Sem Trim Bkack.

Car Guys Premium Plastic Restorer. Yes it's for plastic that is oxidized (does a dang good job of bringing color back), and lasts many washings. I use it on the cowl, headlight trim and side moldings... excellent product. A tad greasy when applying.
Keep in mind that there is a difference between molded in color and painted plastic parts. The molded in color parts can sometimes be improved with products such as Back to Black, Ultimate Black and others. Items that are painted black or the dark charcoal of the 85/86 cars will often require products and techniques more similar to restoring your painted surfaces like hood, roof, doors, etc.
The black painted trim is a single stage product that has minimal sheen. It's not a primer, but doesn't have the same protection from sun, oxidation, etc. that a gloss sheen product would have. That is the reason that it tends to oxidize and look bad much sooner than any of the gloss painted surfaces. Unfortunately sometimes the best option is to simply repaint as mentioned above. Unfortunately if painting is required you are often better to do all the body side moldings and/or most of the items all together to give a nice uniform look. Restoring the items piece by piece will often make them stand out compared to the un-refinished items and just doesn't look as good IMHO. Good luck!
