Default My 86 GT I just picked up today after searching for months.

I've been looking for an 86 GT hatch since late October of last year. I wasn't too picky on color, anything except Medium Canyon Red. I've had the worst of luck and had about 5-7 deals fall through all at the last minute. Finally everything fit together and a deal finally got made. I drove up with my friend in his truck and trailered the car back from NY.

Here are some pictures. I'll try and post more, but these are just some quick shots I got. I woke up really early this morning and although the trip wasn't as far as some other trips I had planned, nearly 4 1/2 hours one way with gas/food stops along the way and then back still left me exhausted. My friend who went with me who had the truck we used to tow the Mustang, also has an 86 GT. After we dropped my car at my house, we went to his house and were looking over his car for a while. He realized he had an extra set of TrickFlow heads since the buyer threw in a ton of extra parts when he bought the car last summer. He threw in the stock SRA w/ 5-lug conversion (has an IRS installed), BBK SSI manifold -brand new, rebuilt T5, extra pair of AMR 18" wheels & tires, a bunch of items new in the bag like, trim pieces, moldings, etc. The TF heads are completely assembled and just seem to have a few threads that need to be re-threaded at the spots that seal the valve covers. Anyways, here's the car.

    Great car, congratulations!

    One word:
    WOW!!!!

    Are those pictures from 2011??
That car is in amazing shape!
It looks like it's always been in a garage, and never driven in bad weather.

That car is in amazing shape for a Tri-State area car.
As you likely know, that car has been converted to mass air.

It looks like it still has the worthless death-trap cr*p Fox-body brakes.
Imho, that's the only thing that I suggest to change.

Imho, the real name of the color is Porno Red. :-)

Thanks! The pictures are current, the first two are from a couple months ago before the owner added the 5.0 badges. Totally agree on the brakes. I plan on installing 03/04 Cobra brakes. Unfortunately i'd have to either get 5 lug versions of the 17" ponys or get a different set of 5 lug wheels. As I said in my post before, my friend has an SRA with 5-lug axles from his SRA he has lying around in excellent condition since he has an IRS in his 86 GT and I can always just get SN95 front spindles. The car was repainted, but that was in 1993 and he was the 4th owner and every owner took great condition of the paint and made sure to wash and always wax the car. The reason I bought the car, was how rust-free it was. I asked for detailed pictures of the strut towers, frame rails, door jams, hatch, etc. The only area with a very minor issue is a small area about the size of a Gatorade cap close to the hatch keyhole with some bubbling, otherwise it is close to rust free. Don't get me wrong, the car shines up great in pictures, but it does have some nicks and chips in the paint from 4-5 feet away, but i'm not at all arguing for the price I paid and the interior is in excellent condition as well. Lol, I hate the porno red interior, it's a no-go for me. Idk who at Ford in the 80s thought that was a great idea to make every piece of the interior in red, like literally every piece.

The car is already back at my house in my garage. First thing i'm going to do is start cleaning the interior and then engine bay. I'll work on the exterior last. Luckily my friend gave me those TrickFlow heads. I gotta track down the serial number on them to find out exactly which heads they are.

My 99 GT had a Vortech S-Trim, then built block, single turbo, return fuel system, etc. Before I totaled my WRX I worked more on the suspension and had a nice balance of performance upgrades. Tuned @ 20.5lbs on 93, FMS TMIC, full TBE, Cobb AP, TurbosSmart BPV, Exedy clutch, and a bunch of suspension mods mentioned. I'm hoping to keep this 86 GT much more balanced. I plan on going all motor, 331/347 stroker, tubular k, A-arms, 5-way adjustable struts, coilovers, panhard bar, torque arm, 4.10s, and i'd like to rebuild the T5 by Hanlon since they're close by and install a new clutch at the same time since the current one feels like it needs two feet to press it down. I wish I still had the TKO600 from my 99 GT before I sold it to a guy in Georgia with a notchback.

Congratulations on your find. Does it not already have trickflow heads installed? Appears as if prior owner already installed TF intake and valve covers and giving the other mods like mass air, electric fans, under drive pulley (assuming ac delete) that it may have the TF cam and heads.

Thanks! I assumed they were stock, but they are aluminum. I plan to remove the valve cover and take a look. The previous owner told me what the engine was basically stock. As I said my friend just gave me a set of TrickFlow heads, so I do have a set, just not on the car. As for the cam, I do not know, the car sounds like it has an aftermarket cam. He was only the 4th owner and all the mods mentioned are correct and the owner told me those were done, but said the engine was stock, except for the TrickFlow upper and lower.

I thought i'd post a few more pics that I posted on a another Mustang forum I took after I got the tags, registration, paid taxes, have got the title in my name in like 3-4 days which was extremely surprising on the turn-around time.

    Here is the mod list:

Trick Flow top end kit --->
Trick flow Twisted Wedge Heads (170cc)
Trick flow stage 1 cam (Track Max)
    Trick flow lower intake
Trick flow upper intake (Track Heat)
    Trick flow 1.6 roller rockers
    Trick flow valve covers
    King Cobra Clutch
    Stock T5 (yeah I know)
    A/C & Smog Pump Delete
    Pro-M Mass Air Meter
    24lb injectors
Mass air flow conversion with A9L ECU
    70mm throttle body
    Walbro 255 lph fuel pump
    LMR Short Throw Shifter
    BBK headers
    BBK cold air intake
    BBK Underdrive pulleys

Thanks guys! the right flowmaster tailpipe was barely hanging in there and when I jiggled it, it feel off and it looked like a 12 year tried to weld it to the muffler. Anyways, I went to my buddy's house yesterday, which was cool, because I parked it in his garage next to his LRB 86 GT and I brought a slip joint and a U-clamp and we used a sawsall to cut off all these horrible weld marks and smooth it out on a grinder. There was already a U-clamp on the end of the flowmaster muffler, so we pushed in the 2 1/2" ID into the muffler and slipped the 2 1/2" OD over the tailpipe once it was smoothed out and finally got a solid connection. No more rattling noises from that area!

We both started our cars and his is definitely louder. He has BBK shortys, O/R H, which is the same as me and I coulldn't tell when I looked under his car but I think they were Bassani and he also has an IRS with, not Magnaflow or Basani tips since I had both on my 99 Mustang GT. They were some type of 3" rolled tip hooked to a connecter which is the same that SLP or Magnaflow uses. Maybe it's the fact he has a 331 stroker his car is louder.

My dads LTD got no louder with the 331 over the stock 302, and that was with a mildly aggressive more cam
(which ain't hard over stock). It has FMS shorties, full 2.5 H and tails (no cats), but Dynomax Super turbo mufflers,
    which are super quiet.

    Must be the mufflers then.

Here's some pictures of both of our cars when we fixed the exhaust leak on my car.

Will do. Picking up a few things this week. Nothing major though, just a Ford Motorcraft battery, PA Performance 130 Amp alternator, and i'm trying to figure out what to pick up next. I want to lower the car and do LCAs, springs, anti-sway bars, CC plates, but at the same time the car is still a 4 lug and I like the wheels since they only have about 9-10k miles on them, but to do a proper Bilstein strut up front with coilovers means I need an SN95 spindle, which means 5 lug conversion. So i'm in a bit of a pickle here. I really don't want to buy a new set of 17" chrome ponys in 5 lug and buy SN95 spindles along with 03/04 Cobra brakes and fortunately my friend has almost new 5 lug axles in his 8.8 since the guy did a 5 lug swap before installing an IRS in his 86 GT and told me I can have them. I can buy a set of wilwood 5 lug brakes up front for around $800, but that is honestly as much as i'm willing to spend at one time for each mod, except for other things that may need more money all at once like a supercharger set-up.

I made the mistake with my 99 GT. I had full bolt-ons and then bought a Vortech SQ head unit and pieced the whole kit together myself and installed it all together once I bought every part. The car made 406 rwhp and I was happy for a while, then I traded my SRA with a guy for his 03 IRS and damn that thing is a pain to install on jack stands and i'm glad I had 4 friends helping me get it into place. After that I ripped out the engine, installed a tubular K, bought a forged bottom end, ported heads, turbo kit, return fuel system, and soon i'm $15k in the hole the car is no closer to being finished.

This time i'm trying to keep spending under $1k at a single time and make it so I can install that same part and drive it the very same week after I install it. I know this isn't always possible for every single part, as some things need to be rebuilt, or taken to the shop for porting for example and that amount of downtime can't be helped, but I tend to go over board with spending a ton and ripping everything apart and having a project for years on end, not this time. Sorry if that doesn't make sense to some people, but i'm trying to keep this car on a slower pace for modifying it is all.
