Default Has anyone tried the door panel backing board set from fox resto?

    Hello,

My 1983 GT door panels are in good shape, the vinyl, but they are wavy.

I was wondering. Has anyone tried the door panel backing board set from fox resto?

    Thanks

I have used a couple of sets of the backer boards on both the 4 Eye and the Aero panels. I forget the name of the company that actually makes them, but I believe its the same for most vendors.

They work just fine and will fix the waviness of water damaged originals. Keep in mind that it is not a simple swap. Depending on your door panel condition you may need to do some repair work for it to look good. The vinyl/carpet has to removed from the original backer board. That includes removing staples and carefully lifting the glued sections off the backer. The all vinyl door panels may be good to use as is if you are careful. In my experience most of the panels with carpet lowers, the vinyl edging on the carpet doesn't hold up well and that ends up destroyed when trying to remove. You can buy new carpet lowers from AAC carpet and many vendors. That is the best option, but that does require the carpet to be sewn onto the upper vinyl.

You will have to rivet the new door panel backer onto the metal upper curved top section and then glue and staple the vinyl/carpet back into place making sure to not over stretch and align all the openings. If you take your time and have any skills in regard to upholstery work, the panels will look virtually brand new. If you don't have the tools or skills, I do recommend taking to a local upholstery shop. I did that for having the carpet sewn back on. Hope that helps.

I got mine from LMR. They work good. I used 3m adhesive on the board. I cut the carpet off and got the new carpet from LMR. The carpet was a little small for my 82 door panel. I added a small strip of black vinyl to cover the gap. Its an easy job as long as you don't damage the vinyl removing the old board.
