    Default Spread bore carb question

    So, I’m working on an 82 fairmont that I spent my entire pandecation adding parts to. (8.8, 5 lug, control arms, poly bushings, v8 swap, exhaust, etc) and I have an issue..

    I got a really good deal on a holly street dominator intake with a freshly rebuilt Edelbrock spread bore carb. I’m a big fan of Quadra-jets and this is my daily driver. Obviously I’m not going for huge horsepower. As the intake is not great. I just want a dependable driver.

    the question I have is this- is there a way to properly set of the tv cable for an aod with the spreadbore? Does the tv cable mount on the same plane as the throttle cable?

    when I put this together, I put 3.73s in and I’m driving 100 miles a day. And I just picked up this aod from a friend that did a 5 speed swap.

    Anyone have any ideas? Or can anyone post a pic of their carb/aod throttle for me to use as a starting point? This is the manifold I am using.

    thanks

    Wow. Ive been around mustang and ford forums for decades and i have never seen anyone post like you do.

    Thank you. I have gotten quite the education today. I didn’t know there was a rod option for the TV in an aod.

    so, i have a question about the TV. Do both styles (rod and cable) interchange? Or are they different style transmissions as well? My AOD in out of an early 90’s mustang. Of the non-electronic variety.

    Yes, they can interchange. AOD's thru 1985 used a TV rod. 1986-up used the cable.

    All AOD's are non-electronic.

    Lokar makes a nice cable too that can be used to operate the AOD with a carb.

    yeah, I know. I just called it out because I ha e had people try to tell me that I had an AODE because “that year mustang only had aode”. I hate people. Anyway, I figured I would clarify. Just in case.

    thank you for clarifying what years had a rod. Now I know where to start. I imagine setting up with a rod will be easier?

    I like the Q-Jet as well. If somebody made a 351W spreadbore intake that is what I would be running on my Crown Vic. I believe the TV cable for the 200-4R and 700-R4 works on the same principle as the for AOD TV cable (1:1 ratio of throttle to TV cable ratio). That might make it easier to use a Lokar cable with a stock Q-Jet that originally came on a car with an overdrive automatic transmission.

    I have a TV cable corrector bracket on the Holley on my Crown Vic to give the proper geometry. I use the factory TV cable that was connected to the stock 2 barrel carb.

    The Q Jet 750 doesn't top out until 515 SAE Gross hp, or about 450 hp net.

    The Q Jet 800 cfm, more like 560 SAE gross or 490 hp net

    Factory 370 SAE Gross horsepower Rochester's # 7040286, or 7040288 on the 1970/1971 CobraJet 429 with auto trans had the Rod operated kickdown, but its hard to copy as that carb had Fords 4300/4300D and later 4350 linkage on it when GM's RP division built it.

    7040285 = Manual trans w/AC; Autolite tag D0OF-F
    7040286 = Auto trans w/AC; Autolite tag D0OF-E
    7040287 = Manual trans w/o AC; Autolite tag D0OF-A
    7040288 = Auto trans w/o AC; Autolite tag D0OF-B

    The green color on the 26270 rod was made by Carter for RP, and that's how Ford got it, but it has an upper adaptor riveted to it so it copies the C4/C5/C6/FMX rod position. Everything used the same key distance outwards from the primary throttle blade , but on the AOD, its locked forward and does not have the 10-20 degrees lost motion and spring back. All carbs turn about 80 degrees total less about 1 to 2 degrees curb idle; 18.8% of throttle movement is lost motion on a C4/C5/C6/FMX.

    this is the 4300D.

    This is the same rod link on the 429 CJ Qjet

    See http://429mustangcougarinfo.50megs.com/new_page_6.htm

    Due to Ford and GM and Chrysler and AMC's different management edicts, and Autolite/Motorcraft/Holley (Ford) , Rochester (GM), Carter (Mopar)and the buy-in Everyman carbs (AMC's), the Spread-bore died opposite to its birth. The Qjet was longest on from 1965 to 1991. The Autolite Spreadbore, 1968 to 1972, the Motorcraft, 1970 to 1979, the Carter Thermoquad, 1967-1986, the Holley QuadraJet replacements, the 4165/4175, 1969-1988, 4360, 1974-1993. The E4ME was the last 4MV incarnation, and this was the Thermquad Cop car 318 replacement from 1987 till late 1989. AMC's lost the 4350 a year later than Ford on the 390 and 401. About 1988, Weber and then in 1993 onwards Edlebrock organised a new replacement Square bore and Spreadbore range, the Qjet replacement 1405s and 1406s and 1905/1906 AVS2's. Recently, Summits square bore 4010/4011 was a remake of Holley's ill fated 1988 carb, a Ford 4100 with different K cluster.

    Down in the land of Oz, with the exception of the 2-3120, and 2-3156 US made Bendix Stromberg WW 2barrel equipped 230/240 Hp 2V 302C and 250/260 Hp 351C, and the Holley 750/80 cfm 4bbl 300 hp GTHO's, everything Cleveland 302 and 351 got the spread-bore intake from 1971 onwards, either Fords Autolite, 600 or 750 cfm Motorcraft, or 800 cfm Thermoquad Carter.

    For 1979, Ford USA went back to the new square bore 600 cfm 4180/4190/4195 Holley 4bbl for its 429 trucks and eventually, the Fox 5.0, truck 5.8, 370 and 460.

    That was only when it became clear in 1978 that the 600 or 750 cfm Motorcraft 4350 4bbl wasn't going to continue; AMC decided to use the Ford had 2150 2-bbl on the 360, and Ford had either the 2150 2-bbl or VV 2700/7200 carbs on offer.

    Due to the EGR valve position, Ford decided to use High mount rod actuation from 1980 to 1985 on sedans, and 4180/4190/4195 4bbl trucks, and the Feedback 2-bbl Motocraft trucks.

    The Lokar uses a drop down Chevy sand Mopar style system.

    Without EGR, easy solution to use cable.

    Few different people make the same basic bracket.
