    Default Timing Belt Jumps

1988 Turbo Coupe, Its sat for about 6 months before I got back to it. Drained the gas, blew out the fuel lines from front to back and cleaned the injectors. Before the key was ever turned, fresh gas went in and fuel lines were primed. Tried to start the car and the timing jumped, pulled the covers and put the timing marks back and tried again and the belt jumped again. Tried to start it with the covers off and watched the crank rotate backwards after the starter trigger was released causing the belt to jump. The timing belt and tensioner were replaced about 5miles ago, car ran strong before was parked. Any help would be great.

    Default wrong belt by mistake?

Round tooth belt on a square tooth cogged engine?
belt tensioner ok and setting right?
My 79 has run backwards a bit (cheap gas) many times after ko no problem
Long time habit now is to stall engine, brake on, after key off.

Square tooth, new tensioner, and i am assuming the settings are the timing marks that you are talking about, then yes #1 at TDC, cam set to proper alignment and distributer set to #1

When the tensioner was replaced was the tensioner spring replaced as well?

When I replaced the tensioner in my 85 2.3 I did not replace the spring and the timing would jump, after the spring was replaced it was fine.

i was thinking tensioner position as a setting
releasing the bolts so tensioner moves onto the new belt
turning the engine over 2x times to remove slack making sure belt does not jump time
Torque pivot and adjustment bolts to spec. Pivot 28-40, adj bolt 14-21
    Recheck timing marks

The tensioner was replaced as a unit, so yes the spring was replaced as well. I have done the belt the replacement steps with the belt that is already on it, I am going to get a new belt tomorrow. there are some rounded teeth and one cracked tooth. Last belt was a Dayco, the replacement that I put on was Duralast, going to go back with a Dayco.

Replaced mine last year with Ford M-6268-A221 square tooth timing belt E5RE-6268-A2A GATES.
Listed in older Ford Performance Catalogs.
    Ford dealer sells belts too.

Belt tensioner was no good, replaced it and runs like a champ. Now just have to fix the coolant leaks.
