Default Signs your Serpentine belt tensioner is wearing out?

Anyone ever had the spring on that tensioner wear out? I had a bad alt bearing, and a bad idler pulley, but it still gives a little squeal up over 4k. Is that the spring not holding the idler down with appropriate pressure?

Some have the little range indicator lines, but I think that mainly detects belt stretch.
With a belt mounted see how much deflection is there. Too much could indicate a weak tensioner spring.

Normally they start bouncing with the enginr running, or if it sits a while it tends to stick in position...

It is a wear item just like most under hood parts. Not unusual for something like this due to age and mileage. They are pretty sturdy and last a long time, but they will wear out over time. Generally aren't too expensive to replace even when needed.

I will need a replacement belt tensioner for my 79 5.0 but have never seen them for sale. Where are they available?

I used to buy them at the parts stores. Seems like I had several go out during my 3 decades of driving these old Fords.
