I am replacing the carpet in my 85 RS. I am going to prep the floor boards ext. I notice on both the drivers and passengers side firewall the is a large rubber with padding mat. How do you remove and should I put them back in?

My car came to me without them but they make sense to me. Hopefully someone on here has more information!

That is the firewall insulation pad. It will go all the way to the bottom of the windshield and completely across the width of the dash. It is there to lessen engine noise, vibration, and provide additional insulation to help with HVAC. Personally I would keep it and reinstall. You can add additional sound deadening "Dynomat" if you like and some remove it entirely and replace with only the newer style sound deadening in some cases. Unless yours is rotten, destroyed, or doused in mice/rat urine and feces I would keep it. Good Luck!

I was planning on keeping it as it is in good shape. I wanted to remove it in the time being as It is kinda in the way of my floor prepping. I guess I will lift it up so I can get behind it as far as I can.
Thanks for the info.

Mine smelled terrible of mouse piss so I threw it away.
someone sells a replacement for the stocker but it’s kind of expensive.
79 Zephyr, 4.6L 4v/4r70w swap, with team z front and rear suspension, 8.8 and upgraded brakes and coil overs. Running Holley Terminator X Max.
Also know that you can't easily remove it. between the steering column mount and the HVAC being on top of it, there is a ton to remove just to get to it. If it doesn't smell I'd leave it alone.
