    Default Tires for 15" wheels

Hi guys, I have been using this site for help restoring a 1986 Mustang LX hatch. I have a set of 10 hole 15" original wheels that I had reconditioned and I need to decide on tires. The car will have a stroked 351 producing about 550 horsepower a T5 transmission and suspension from AJE with adjustable shocks and springs. My intention is that it is a cruiser that I can take to the strip once in a while. I would prefer summer performance tires but am afraid if I go to slicks the street handling won't be great and the transmission may not hold up. As you can see I am new to this any help would be greatly appreciated!

See here, here, here and here. Those links get progressively older, so some of the tires listed may no longer be available; the first link has the most recent info (and even that is a little old).

Long story short, performance tire selection for 15" wheels is poor at best, with basically no summer tire options in useful sizes. And the narrow stock 10 hole wheels don't help when it comes to getting the power down. I would strongly suggest looking for different (bigger & wider) wheels to get better tire options.

Falken rt615k+. Got some 14s on my Audi and they stick like glue. Pretty sure they have 15’s. 200tw. Nitro Nt01 comes in 225/45/15. They are a 100tw tire. You WILL get traction with those.

Unfortunately I realized this after spending on rear disc 4 lug brakes and reconditioning the 10 holes. Hope to not have to start over

You can get lmr trx remakes in we 16inch and the look awesome and open up a whole world of sizes while still looking stock. I heard rumors of 10hole 16s but not sure of that is true.

Mickey Thompson makes a 235/60/15 https://mickeythompsontires.com/stre.../sportsman-s-t They also make a 26-8-15 Sportsman SR, but that may be a bit tall and not what you are really looking for. https://mickeythompsontires.com/stre.../sportsman-s-r

As stated already there are limited options for a performance 15" tire at this time. There are still options, but most will be some sort of compromise. Good Luck!

Thank you Wraith, I like the look of the ST model. What size would you recommend for OE 10 hole wheels.

Whether they make 15" tires isn't the question, it's whether they make 15" tires that will fit his car.

You WILL also have tires that are more than 2-1/2" shorter than stock, and WILL look incredibly stupid on the car.

Man! 500hp and 10 holes....... Good luck.

10 holes are what 7" wide? 245-265 width at best, depending on sidewall height.

The ST in a 235/60/15 would probably be my first choice if going with Mickey. They make quality tires, not sure that the ST is the optimum option for drag racing, but should be a good all around tire with decent wear and traction overall. At least its a bit more modern design than say the BFG's. I like the BFG's, but they are an old design and some have had wear issues long term from what I have heard. Good Luck!

I've got a set of the Micky Thompson S/T tires on my "other" car. I replaced 15 year old BFG's. The traction is definitely better, but I was disappointed in the appearance. The tread width is 1" narrower than the BFG. The BFG's are kind of squared off with the tread to sidewall, where these now curve in to the tread with the same tire and rim. Just my $.02. I did go with the Vredestein tires on my 10 holes, They have great traction, never had my Mustang in the rain, so can't comment there. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear they make the 225/60/15's anymore.

Go for the repro 16s. My inexpensive Firehawk s looked awesome and there are sooo many options our there with race pedigree for half the price of not inspiring 15 tires.

And if you want to see how awful a low profile race tire looks on a fox, here you go...

We've had a good experience with Cooper Cobra GT in 235/60/15 on my son's 86 ragtop.

I looked at some various tires from General on Discount Tire's website too. Surprisingly they even had some that are performance with an all season rating and a Z rating available in 225/60/15 or 235/60/15.

    good luck

Interesting. Made in Thailand. Wonder if I can trust the manufacturing.
