Default 86 body side moldings on 88

    Hello,
I have an 86 GT hatch. Both of my doors are rotted and I’ve been on the hunt for new ones. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to track down a set of 85-86 doors. I know that those two years the body side moldings were the same and they changed them from 87 and up. Long story short I found a set of clean doors from an 88 GT. Is it possible to install the 86 side moldings on the 88 doors? I don’t want to have to convert to the newer bumper and fenders. I like the four eyes. Name: C6AB7A4A-C26F-462A-92D8-550990063377.jpeg

Yes, the door's profile is the same 79-93. So you can remove the 88 door moldings and install the earlier ones.

Be careful not to curl the moldings during the removal.

    Good luck!

The 87-93 doors have holes in the top of the door next to the window beltline weatherstripping for the 87-93 trim that matches with the Aero quarter windows. You will most likely want to weld or fill those holes as they will allow water leaks into the door shell. There are a couple of options on how to fill them, but not a big deal. The inside of the door is slightly different than your 86, but everything can be transferred to the newer doors without too much trouble. Good Luck!
