    Default metal prep for painting-answered

The Capri I'm working on was oil sprayed back in the day. It preserved the car well, but eliminating the undercoating for a clean surface to sand and paint on has been frustrating. I've tried acetone, but it just seems to spread the residue around. Any ideas what to use?
Sorry. tried a search and this has already been asked and answered. Couldn't see how to delete post

If it were me, I would recommend lacquer thinner and lots of rags (paper towels) as it will be the least expensive option.

There are also specific wax and grease removers (Prep-sol) but they are higher cost and more suited to use during actual body work / paint prep (won't eat into primers and such).

MEK works really well for this type of prep. I will forewarn the MEK is NASTY stuff. Respirator and Nitrile gauntlet style gloves are the minimum. It will eventually eat the gloves also. It will clean up the oil and will actually soften any remaining paint underneath temporarily, so new paint will definitely stick. I used MEK as the prep solvent when spray bedliners in new trucks years ago. Worked great on that fresh baked paint. Never had a failure of any kind over 3 years of doing it. Good Luck!
