I just realized that the cheap HF hvlp gun (the purple one) only uses 6 cfm at 40 psi. There are plenty of youtube videos on it. I believe the current price is around $13.00. One of the complaints is that it isn't really serviceable. But at $13, who cares. What made me bring this up was a video I watched last night on YouTube. The channel was "Uncle Tony's Garage" and he used the cheap HF purple gun with, I believe, a 30 gallon compressor. He actually ended up painting 2 cars in two different episodes.

UTG is now my favorite YouTube channel. It's mostly Mopar related, but interestingly enough, he has a VERY interesting history with early efi fox mustangs. He put out a 1.5 hour episode talking about his involvement in racing his new stock 87LX, along with a couple buddies and their efi foxes back in 87-88.

I apologize. The video I posted above is good, but he's using an older Harbor Freight gun. He replaced it with the newer version for the next one.

I'll leave the previous video posted above because it shows a very good example of what a novice DIY'r goes through.

Size: 101.5 KBrn it upside down, that's the big limitation. I have a cheap 21 gallon kobalt, turned all the way up at compressor and down at the gun. It did fine. The pain viscosity I do believe matters as well, and the compressor did have the cfm,

Don't use my upright 150 psi, 6 HP, 30 gal for painting. But that CFM limit also applies to air tools. If the tool's CFM consumption exceeds the CFM output of the compressor, the oil-less ones can't keep up and start to get hot. Any air-tool you buy be sure it fits the compressor output. In my experience, more expensive tools use less air; cheaper ones use more. I've been using my oil-less Craftsman for well over 15 years now.
