Funny you should say that. I have had this conversation with my neighbor a few houses down. For the most part, he agrees with me. He signed up for law enforcement when he was young. He wanted to change the world and make it a better place like his father did. He finds himself on traffic duty along with the rest of the officers. There is a small group of undercover officers working under a new initiative to fight the growing drug problem. All of them (I believe there are 6) are currently under investigation for multiple crimes involving trampling of citizens constitutional rights. There is a video posted by an attorney showing them breaking and entering without a warrant...even cutting surveillance video cables to cover their crimes. You're welcome to pm me for a link, but this is happening in many areas across the US. I'm not anti-cop. I'm anti-police state. Most cops would rather be stopping real crime instead of fleecing regular Americans.

I suppose my environment of course has an impact. Our agency is smallish (not sure, maybe 175 sworn?) and I am 3rd from the top (in seniority, not rank) and stuff like mentioned by you (Broncojunkie - I neglected to 'quote') is essentially unheard of. I am not just saying that. Have their been events/issues? Sure, a few, of varied topics, and those folks were dealt with quickly and appropriately. I don't recall anything racial.

I know of nobody looking for 'revenue'. I know of nobody even rumored to be (dirty? On the take?) and would frankly be shocked and embarrassed if that were to occur.

So perspective is definitely going to offer a much different picture.

But what should be consistent is all folks who value their freedoms/liberties/rights should look down on wanton destruction. For example, if a person owned a business and it were destroyed in some type of riot not related to that person, one that person maybe even supported the idea of peacefully, how is that justified? Did that business owner deserve to be victimized? Does it further the 'cause'?

Not to get into too political discussion, but I have several friends and buddies that are law enforcement. I have no reason to believe they are not honest and trustworthy. Could one or more of them be less than that, I am sure it's possible, but I would be very surprised. One of my buddies, I went to HS with and I wasn't really sure how becoming a Police Officer was going to be with him. I have to admit that he has far surpassed my expectations and has done a spectacular job.

With all that said, keep in mind that in most jurisdictions, the local government, mayor, city manager, etc. as well as the district attorney, etc. often dictate how and what the police, patrol, enforce, etc. If the town wants/needs revenue from traffic violations, well . . . I am not a police officer and NO I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but from years of discussions with my friends and buddies about this, very seldom are they allowed to make the choices in enforcement that many of them feel is in the best interest of the community, the citizens, etc. Most of that is left up to our elected officials. Not saying there aren't rogue cops and bad cops, just keep in mind that if you are aren't happy with how and what your local enforcement is doing, most likely you need to start climbing the chain of command and start voicing your opinion with the ballot box. Again just my .02 your experience and opinion may vary.

Not looking to argue but if your neighborhood has this much crime do you have a Neighborhood Watch program? Are any of your neighbors willing to step up and help the Police? Have you ever personally called the Police on suspicious activity?

My neighbors take a proactive stance on strangers cruising our neighborhood. One of our single Mothers had a stalker from her work. We helped catch him as he was also peeping.

There is a house about 6 or so houses down our street that is a known druggy/criminal hangout. The mom ended up in my next door neighbor's yard a couple years ago...car in their ditch. Otherwise, would have been sitting in my living room. The mom was driving and son was in passenger seat. Both of them od'd on heroin. The mom had a warrant, so after narcan'ing both of them, they let the son walk home and took mom to jail. She was back home and causing trouble the following day. A few weeks later, mom was back in jail and the son brought over some druggy friends. They kidnapped another druggy and his girlfriend. Tortured both of them and killed the guy. Mom and son were back in the house within a month.

We don't have a neighborhood watch. We are a close-knit community and we all look out for each other. I have a good camera setup outside and have caught a few crimes on camera. Most of us are gun owners and a few of us (me included) are gun enthusiasts. As I mentioned earlier, this is a GOOD neighborhood. I realize it doesn't sound that way, but I live about 10 minutes from Huntington WV and the drug problem has created a persistent crime problem. So in comparison, this is a good neighborhood. We're actually outside of city limits. Think "suburbs" but we don't care to ride a 4-wheeler down the road lol!

As I stated earlier (and Trey touched on this above), most cops are good people and want to fight crime but their hands are tied by politicians. These politicians are only concerned with revenue. I vote. My friends and neighbors vote. But we can only do so much.

I feel like we got off on another topic. I didn't mean to start an argument about what percentage of cops are bad. My point was that I have a particular sympathy for civil unrest when it comes to law enforcement (police state, not cops in general) and even I believe that what law enforcement is doing here in the riots are warranted. I commend them for fighting the violent thugs and looters. They are WAY more restrained than I could ever be, given their situation

    Hot weather night 70's-80's
Detroit blue collar Warren MI police and the mayor lead their day march with an escort.
From 8 Mile Rd (the same as in the movie) north up M-53.
City provided school buses to give the walkers a ride back to their cars.
    No incidents.
Detroit white collar suburb Troy MI someone tried to run over protesters.
Claimed he had the green light...no tickets
Detroit has more trouble. Different day and night protest locations again.

There was a protest locally on Sunday night but it was very peaceful. I guess you could say there were actually two protests as one group was there to protest what they see as racism by police and another group of openly armed citizens were there to protect their property.

We have a great sheriff in my opinion, and he had a noticeable police presence at the event but no arrests were made as things remained calm. Some people complained about the armed citizens, several of whom had taken up positions on a rooftop, "like snipers" as one man reported. To which the sheriff replied:

The people wielding guns in Hollidaysburg on Sunday were exercising their Second Amendment rights, just as the protesters in the borough were exercising their First Amendment rights, according to Blair County Sheriff James Ott
I could not agree with him more!

I don't know that such an approach would work in the big cities but I'll bet the criminal rioters would be a lot more restrained if they thought they might face repercussions for their behavior.

I used a few highly-charged expletives last night when fixing a popped tire! Second time this freakin' (and that wasn't one of the expletives) this freakin' month, in the once nice hamlet of FRAMINGHAM MASS. Highly recommend! Cleanses the soul. Using expletives I mean, not getting a popped tire. Makes you feel a decade younger, DO IT

How many schoolbooks will have to be rewritten again?

Am puzzled about tearing down historic statues and banning flags.
They could stand as reminders of past errors.
Human behavior and 'perceived ideals' is causing havoc again.
Is social media again causing oversensitiveness of everything?
Whats next? Stonehenge? Roman Coliseum? Berlin Wall is gone.
Putting a color on things is not being neutral or having an equal bias.
How about three more political parties?
One platform combining the bad of both D and R.
One platform combining the best of both D and R.
    One platform combining all centered.
There was a time when swear words and nudity were banned from tv.
Is history being rewritten for 'correctness', whatever that is?
The American Flag flies at 1/2 staff more than full nowadays. Rare in the past.

Default USPS cut back at vote time but not holidays?

Annual WDC cruise runs thru Royal Oak MI every year.
No sponsors this year. Families are still out cruising and watching.
RO mayor says cruising and watching is silly. Sure, when there is no money in it for them.
Most agree cruising is a sort of mental therapy for the times.

Then the USPS having issues. May not be able to handle voters. Make things worse.
Is this not an important time and task? A people need, not a business decision.
Less ot needed than the holidays. Clear attempt to sabotage a US election?
Want to bet at Christmas holidays they will put on extra personal for shoppers?
Oh boy if USPS cut back then, there would be holy you know what raised from many.
Weaken them with a virus, then run them over. Attitude for disaster. Sick.

USPS has been cutting executive positions, not carriers. So they're getting rid of dead weight at the top in an attempt to stop losing money. They lost $4.5 Billion in the first 3 months of this year. The postmaster general who stepped down in June was predicting a loss of $13 Billion for the year. That's why the new guy is trying to save taxpayers money.

They're also getting rid of equipment made for letters that cannot handle packages, because people are mailing fewer and fewer letters.

They can't just hemorrhage money forever. Frankly, a lot of these cuts should have started years ago.
