    Default 81 Mustang Ghia Coupe decoded buck tag came back 2 tone? Need help identifying.

    I picked up a 1 owner 1981 Mustang Ghia Coupe with a 3.3 inline 6 and auto trans. The buck tag comes back as 8N Dark Cordovan Metallic for top and bottom and 8D Medium Bittersweet Glow for center. Anyone have pics or any ideas what it should look like? The original owner painted the whole car Dark Cordovan. I'll attach pics of the buck tag and the decode results as well as the car.

    Nice find, I found 1 pic of that car and his one drive has tons! I didn't see anything about shaddow tone though, can you expand on what that means?

    Its an old GM slang term for two tone light shaded internal color perimeter paint jobs protoyped for 81 and used in 1982 model year onwards on high end SL/E GM Holden Commodores and Statesman/Caprices. It was devised by expat American Leo Prenneau. Ford USA did this paint system a year before it was, ahem, invented by GM..

    I found this in the gas door which confirms it too. Oh and Ironically I own 2 Holden's, 09 G8 GT and 06 GTO lol

    Fidel had a rare 84 Coupe 2.3 two tone version. And another guy a repainted Capri Hatch in black over white.

    Sorry, cant help with the user name, but the 1979 single tone 2 door coupe the Blue Bomber is one of Fidels many excellent OEM cars

    To make it more interesting I had planned to Barra swap this one but idk it's an original 1 owner so I may have to scrap that idea. I have an 88 SSP as well lol

    Stangman116 should have a background story on a saved two tone 2.3 coupe which was like nearly all of them, repainted after detailing issues from a fender bender. Its why so few remain today. Endura front and rear bumpers dont stop people having to rematch often very difficult to mask and paont detail which Ford and Mercury did very well at the factory.

    gr79 might be a good person to check with, as he did some Ford, GM and Chrysler Corp plant work, and the paint process on dual color US cars is quite special because if they get it wrong, its a massive logistic trick to get it re touched on the line when its "birthed".

    Im an ex in line six GM guy from my Vauxhall and Holden days. The old man and grandad bought British Fords and I really liked them. I did Aussie V8 Falcons, worked on six cylinder Fords at dads utility company and then did A and B series British Leylands for a time, which got me into David Vizard related projects. Did my own carb and intake design. Worked on every six in line from Austin to Zephyr. Lots of fun. The Nissan and Toyota in lines are much lauded, but are really badly designed with many failings. Fords crack blocks too just like RBs, JZees and L series.

    I did Civil Engineering and worked on petroleum and fluid and soil and agg and material testing with engineering work. Lab Tech detail Blessings.

    Everyone likes Barras because they are so tough. Untill you bend a rod.

    Wow! That's a lot of awesome stuff. I like Barras cause ya don't see them in the states and it's better than the big bell 3.3 94hp engine that is in it now lol.

    I never really ventured to the paint areas at DAP. Ford Security is very strict, even as an employee nosing around a plant.
    When in operation, many dangerous places if not fully aware of what is going on. Not worth the risk.
    When in plants, have to obey rules, worker or visitor. One rule is not free to roam about just anywhere or anytime.
    Breaks or lunch times are too short to wander very far from work area. Was possible to take the 'long way' out after shift.
    If a visitor, have to sign in, be tagged, provided PPE, and escorted after being cleared as to having verified business on the plant floor.
    Non-employees would be considered trespassers even back then unless you can prove having business there.
    If seen (usually are obvious), pretty sure a foreman would radio security. No going into different 'neighborhoods'.
    Now there are cameras everywhere and locked doors. Secured areas. When plant is down, is like an empty stadium.
    Before or after shift, no hanging out on plant floor. No clocking in 20 minutes early or late. Hang out off clock in lunchroom or car.
    Skilled trades and office have much more freedom due to nature of their work.

    Assume plants had and have a special area to prep two tones for a second paint and bake pass.
    Repainting in plant will match due to ready access to the same color batch lots.
    Anything taking more than a minute is done off the main lines.
    Off the main line niche work areas and hold areas are scattered in the plants for the special work or production flow control.
    At the end of the final line, assy plants have many service bays like a dealer has.
    At Chrysler, they drove and parked the overflow repairs in the main isles. Plant was closed on weekends, repairs done then.
